Sylvester Mayes (official thread)

Mayes sounds like the real deal. We are going to have two very good PGs next year. It will be interesting to see if Butler or Mayes is going to start next year. It really doesnt matter though, one is going to provide solid depth off the bench. What I am wondering is, what are we going to do with Ron Lewis? He left BGSU to play for a big time school and to be a PG. I don't see him getting much PT there, he's going to have to be happy with playing SG IMO.

I thought Lewis was a SG. It was my understanding that Mayes was a SG as well.

Mayes mentioned in article on Fort Smith. Apparently he was the unanimous MVP of the league.

http://www.swtimes.com/archive/2005/March/10/sports/01_lions_on_mission.html

Redlands (27-3), whose only losses have come to UAFS (twice) and Eastern Oklahoma, went undefeated to win the West. The Cougars, who were the national runner-ups last year, closed the regular season with 10 straight wins.

Redlands won both crossover games against the Vikings — 66-63 in overtime on Nov. 15 at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse and 74-52 on Jan. 20 in El Reno.

The Cougars have the region’s leading scoring in sophomore Sylvester Mayes. Mayes, who’s signed with Ohio State, is averaging 20.3 points per game.

“The big thing for them is the amount of confidence they must have. They must be playing well,” St. John said. “Sylvester Mayes is the unanimous MVP of the league. He’s going to be a factor. We’ve got to know where he is at all times. It’s a challenge.”

Freshman guard Anthony Sims leads the Vikings in scoring with 14.4 points per game, while sophomore forward Juan Lopez is chipping in 12.2 points per game. Sophomore post Shawn King is second in the region in rebounding with 9.7 rebounds per game.

“We can win this thing if we get after it,” St. John said. “You’ve got to believe. If you don’t believe, you’re not going to get it done.”

I got some info on Mayes tonite. I was talking to a kid that plays juco in missouri and I asked him if he played against him and he said he had.

I asked him what he thought of him and he said he is a deadly shooter, he is quick as hell.

Then I asked him if he is better than Jamar and he said it was probably a toss up. He said Mayes can shoot it better than what Jamar can(keep in mind he knows how well Jamar can shoot and he is not basing it on this years performance when Jamar had some confidence issues.) He said that He is probably quicker than Jamar tho. He also said that he was the leader of the team.
