Let's not rag on Chang...yet. Timmy throws the prettiest ball you have ever seen, but he's wildly inconsistent.
I'm not sure if Timmy counts as one of those who, because of the system, looked great. If you look at how many passes he's thrown, he simply DOESNT look great.

But he is a good quarterback, completing a high 50% of his passes, and has the perfect spiral on every throw, nevermind how erratic they may be.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Chad Owens. now HE is glorified by the system because of how many passes are thrown (and since he is the main receiver, how many are thrown toward him). But he deserves a lot more attention than he receives. A lot of people forget that he was the one guy who returned more punts for TDs than Ginn . (plus he's a physical beast. didja SEE his combine weightlifts??)

And about Jason White, I don't see how he is glorified. He's a fine field leader and a fine quarterback. He had better numbers than Leinart last season, remember? And he's a warrior. Two torn ACLs is nothing to scoff about.

How about Ty Detmer? I don't remember seeing him play much, but it seems like most of the BYU QB's in that era were lighting people up.

(I might just be thinking he's overrated b/c of his lack of success in the NFL.)

Frankly, I think you are right on the money about overrated - though possibly for different reasons than his on-field play. Personally, I was never, ever that impressed with Ty Detmer -- despite the gaudy stats, Heisman runner up and all that (the Rocket pipped him thank the lord).
Detmer was given the nod into the NFL as much for BYU's pedigree with McMahon and Young as with the numbers Detmer himself achieved on the field of play. And yes, he is an excellent example of someone who had great teachers, for the system then in place at BYU. Hell he still held over 50 passing records (I think) at last count.
Then again consider the system in which he played. All YAC for the running game. A gimmick ridden offense that is so downright unmanly its offensive. Someone ought to put an asterisk against his records, much as is proposed for roid imbibing Bball players.:wink2:

Here is the diminutive Detmer with another overrated college QB who for the sanity of all Browns fans shall remain nameless, though I hear he answers to whiner... or cry-baby.

Hey - you might be being a bit tough on Kijana. Breaks leg, complex fracture, never the same since. No-one knows how good he might have been. The others (excepting Perry) - stiffs, all.

Still as someone else put it --

any first round draft pick by the Bengals before Palmer, or as I prefer to think of it -- before Marvin Lewis, who's changing football in Cincinnati into a real game once again.

So, a perfectly thrown sprial that is intercepted or drops incomplete is still good? Don't think so. He'll definitely have to improve his consistency if he wants a real shot in the NFL.

As for Owens, there's no way he's a "system player". He would've been great no matter what team he played for. He gets his props not for catching a lot of passes but rather for what he does after he catches them. While not as fast as Ginn, he is actually more elusive because he is shorter and cuts on a dime. He also is bulit like a fireplug and can run through tackles of those weighing 50-100 pounds more than him. Owens will make some NFL team very happy.
