Personally, I was never, ever that impressed with Ty Detmer -- despite the gaudy stats, Heisman runner up and all that (the Rocket pipped him thank the lord).
Detmer never finished second in the Heisman, and the Rocket never won it.

Detmer actually won it as a junior in 1990, with Rocket Ismail finishing second. That was a good thing because ND didn't need another one.

In 1991, a certain scUMer who later won a Super Bowl MVP stopped Detmer from repeating, which at least kept Archie's achievement truly unique.

I'd have to go with Jason Guesser,Joey Harrington, Rohan Davey, and Maurice Clarett.

Man when I was little I thought Rohan Davey was kick ass.....I have no clue why though?
When you were little? How old are you? Davey hasn't been around that long...
Say what you want about Harrington, but I think he will turn into a pretty decent QB.

Here's one for ya-Blair Thomas.

Dammit Grad, I get up to answer the phone and you beat me to it. By the way, they love Rohan here in New England...

After Ty won the Heisman, BYU had a game at Hawaii. He was picked off several times, I don't recall if they won or not. I remember that a Rainbow DB struck a Heisman pose after picking him off in the end zone. My favorite Ty Detmer story.

Hawaii blew out BYU 59-28 on Dec 1, 1990.

Man, this thread is all over the place. Some people are picking college studs who flamed out in the pros due to the change in systems (i.e. Florida QBs). Some people are picking college duds who kicked ass in the pros due to the change in systems (i.e. Cleveland punters....by the way, that's freaking funny as hell, Zurp!). Some people are picking college studs who became duds for any reason at all (Kijana Carter, MoC).

So, I decided to go back and re-read the original message. Now it's perfectly clear why there's so much confusion! NDC, no offense, but what exactly does this mean???

What average player college player was made look great by the system? Whom are the most over-rated?

I'll get away from offense for a while and go, old school, with Aundray Bruce and Brian Bosworth for starters. Mike Mamula was probably the biggest combine stat driven reach in NFL history.

Don't know if any "most overrated" thread is complete without the mention of Tony Mandarich.

Heath Schuler from Tennessee sucked quite a bit of ass in the NFL. Jason White will suck as bad if not worse.

Add Rodney Peete to the mobile QB's who sucked in the NFL category although he managed to hang around and suck for a pretty long time.

It's not official over yet but go ahead and put Chris Perry down on the list of scUM RB's that were NFL duds list. Man that list goes back a ways once you really think about it, anyone heard from Jamie Morris lately? Honorable mention to Penn State.

Lawrence Phillips should be an honorary scUM scUM grad so we can just put him in here as well.

Every fat bastard DL from Miami since Sapp has been touted as the "next Warren Sapp" and I haven't seen one close yet.

Pvt Winslow is working on being a first ballot Flop Hall of Famer. With that contract, being that big of a prick and being on a team that sucks that bad he's well on his way to the rareified air of Leafdom.

Huston and Spurrier's systems are by far the worst offenders of making chicken salad out of chicken shit as far as QB's are concerned. Honorable mention to BYU and Miami FL.

Timmy Chang doesn't even belong in this conversation because I don't think he was ever a "great" college player. A great college QB should be able to lead his team to a better combined record than 27-14 over his last three seasons (particularly in the WAC). A great college player doesn't get benched by his coach. A great college QB doesn't lose to Rice and Florida Atlantic in his senior year, particularly if he has enough talent around him to make it to a bowl game. It seems that the numbers Chang put up in college were more a product of his playing in a conference which has the reputation of playing no defense than his being a "great" college player.

Quarterbacks are easy to judge in this thread... Playing QB in college then going to the NFL is the toughest jump in all of pro sports. There are QB's from every school (including OSU) that looked great then did nothing in the NFL.

They get so much practice that they become STUDS at punting. I think they should pull a trick play sometime and punt on 2nd down. Can you hear the announcers when the punt team comes out? "It's second down and I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!"
