Tampa Bay Rays (official thread)

Their attendance is incredibly weak, their stadium sucks, it's too hot and humid in the summer and no one gives a damn.

Other than that, nothing.
True, but at the very least they should just move, not be contracted. Their management does a heckuva job with the team, they just can't catch a break being in Miami because there are plenty of other things to there rather than catch a baseball game. I am sure there are quite a few places that would welcome them with open arms.

Why should the Marlins be? They have won 2 World Series titles since their inception roughly 10-15 years ago?
Per BK's link, Florida and Tampa were the bottom 2 teams in the league the last few years. And if not for Montreal (now Washington) they would be last in more years. The "too many things to do" excuse is bs though. LA, NY and Chicago don't suffer from lack of other things to do or poor attendance.

Those are the top three cities in the nation, population-wise:

1. NY: over 8 mil
2. LA: nearly 4 mil
3. Chicago: nearly 3 mil

Miami has less than 400,000 people.

Then should they have a team?

Attendance aside, people just don't give a damn in Tampa and Miami about pro baseball. MLB was stupid to expand there.

Why does anone think the newest team in baseball needs another stadium?

What the hell happened to the Tropicana Dome? A farily new and pristine building.

Tropicana Field opened in 1990. At 18, it is hardly new. And it sucks. It has catwalks above the field. Once when I was listening to a Tribe game from there, a D-Rays player hit the ball a ton. It would have been a home run in any other park easily. But it hit the catwalk and an alert Omar Vizquel caught it for an out. Ridiculous.

No sport does well attendance wise in Miami.
Thug U never sells out (even before they fell apart)
The Dolphins didn't do well, even in the Marino years
Hell, the Heat struggled to sell out during their championship season

Yep, expansion there was a bad idea.

I think they thought all the northern retirees would support a local team, but underestimated peoples' loyalties to their teams. An old guy from Boston moving to Miami isn't going to suddenly become a Marlins fan.

Then there are the locals who grew up in Florida, many of whom already had favorite teams based on their locations. To this day, go to Bradenton and you'll find plenty of Pirates fans, in large part because they've been training there for decades. Having made the trip down myself a few times I can tell you the atmosphere is so different than regular season. You can actually talk to the players, see them in restaurants, etc.. The locals get to know the players in the Spring, then follow the team all season.

Besides, there's nothing like sitting in an open stadium in Florida when it's 92 degrees and the humidity is 74%, in July.
