COLUMBUS ? Ohio State has an opening on its football staff after the departure of Taver Johnson to Arkansas.

Arkansas officially announced on Sunday that Johnson, who coached defensive backs at Ohio State, has been hired as assistant head coach/linebackers coach for the Razorbacks.

Johnson is the second assistant coach from Ohio State to bolt for Arkansas, joining Paul Haynes, who is now the defensive coordinator at Arkansas under Coach Bobby Petrino.

"Taver is an extremely enthusiastic and devoted coach," Petrino said in a statement.

Tell you what, Taver will eventually be a head coach and he will excel. During my time at tOSU, it seemed that he was 100% amped every single day. He loves the grind. He is a fantastic teacher and coach who exudes enthusiasm. He is willing to listen to new ideas. I think it is good he didn't get the nod at Arkansas as the interim HC for now. Who knows how bad that thing will get. I hope he gets a fair crack at a decent school in a traditional manner, not as the guy who has only been on the block for a year and is now wading through the Petrino mess.

He is acting as the interim HC right now, although AD Long may appoint a different interim HC after spring practice is over.

I was sure that I saw that Arkansas had named an interim coach already that was not Taver? Unless I was too tired to see straight.... I know I watched Taver in a press conference the day the story broke and he was the interim guy for the moment, but I thought it changed either yesterday or the day before.

edit: upon further review, it does not appear that anyone different has been named as far as I can see with a quick scan of eSPIN, google et al. I think I need to stop falling asleep with sportscenter in the background....

Not watching it while you're awake is even better. :tongue2:

Taver Johnson brings calm, determination to program despite uncertainty about his future

Any moment now, perhaps as soon as Saturday, the day of Arkansas? spring football game, we?ll learn who will lead the Razorbacks through the tunnel to face Jacksonville State on Sept. 1 in Fayetteville.

There is no doubt in Taver Johnson?s mind, nor in his heart, that he?ll charge onto that field with them. In front of them? He still doesn?t know. Much of the speculation in the media casts doubt on the 39-year-old Johnson?s chances to be named interim coach for 2012, even though Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long picked him on April 10, the day Bobby Petrino was fired, to lead the team through spring practices.

Through at least a week and a half of potential chaos.

But Johnson?who has played this game of coaching uncertainty before, a year ago on the Ohio State staff after Jim Tressel was moved out?hasn?t allowed the Razorbacks to be swept up in chaos. As Long suspected he would, Johnson has maintained a disposition of humility, determination and calmness.

?He has stood in front of the team after practice every day,? said senior defensive captain Tenarius Wright, ?and let everyone know: ?I don?t know what the future will bring, but I won?t lie to you. I?ll always tell you the truth. Just practice every day like the lights are on and it?s game day, and we?ll all be OK.? ?

As the interim coach or as a defensive assistant, Johnson will be ?all in? with the Razorbacks going forward, he told Sporting News on Thursday.

?You?re trying to teach young people and develop them into leaders,? he said. ?Well, the best way to develop leadership is you have to be a great follower. Our administration, our school has a right to (decide) its next coach. ? Whatever they feel is best for the program, I?m all in.?

But it can?t be so easy for him, can it?

Think of all Johnson has been through professionally since Tressel resigned nearly 11 months ago. A 6-7 season in Columbus, which was grounds for outrage and/or despair among many Buckeyes fans regardless of the circumstances. A key role on a staff, led by interim coach Luke Fickell, that wasn?t taken all that seriously?by fans, the media or the OSU administration?in regard to the program?s future. Of course, the sanctions brought against the Buckeyes program by the NCAA last December.
