Melo Trimble is very good.

Ohio State (14-8, 6-3) hosts #8 Maryland (18-3, 7-2) Sunday afternoon in a rematch, of sorts. The first game wasn’t much of a match, with Maryland “prevailing” 100-65 on January 16th. In the first meeting, Maryland rode a dominant 1st half to subdue Ohio State. At the time, the Buckeyes had no answer to the Terrapins’ outside shooting and transition offense.

Let’s start by taking a look at some team comparisons.

PPG-O PPG-D RPG FG% 3PT% FT% APG TO/G
Ohio State 71 66 39.2 45.0% 34.0% 65.4% 12.4 13.5
Maryland 77 64 35.8 50.0% 36.6% 76.0% 14.5 13.0

So, what do we have? At first glance, Maryland is a bit better, quite a bit better in FT shooting, on the season than Ohio State. However, since these teams have already played each other, the “season-to-date” statistics are somewhat irrelevant. The relevant team performance differences may be more accurately reflected in the recent box score, accessed in the above link. Go ahead, you can do it.

Here are the Terrapins, likely starter in bold:

Nbr Name Pos MPG FG% 3PT% FT% RPG APG PPG

More to the point, n the last meeting, 6’9″ forward Robert Carter (25 points) and 6’4″ guard Rasheed Sulaimon (22 points) dismembered Ohio State from the inside and the outside. The duo were a combined 19-23 from the field, so their offensive efficiency didn’t leave many points on the table.

Guard Melo Trimble didn’t look to score points (2-5 from the field, 8 points) but with his 9 assists, he controlled the Maryland offense.

Ohio State

Unsurprisingly, with such a young, inexperienced team, ten games into conference play, Thad is still tinkering with his starting lineup. The latest iteration for the previous two games has A.J. Harris starting at point guard and Daniel Giddens at center. I think that both have acquitted themselves well and former starters JaQuan Lyle and Trevor Thompson have been productive coming off the bench. The amount of playing time has shifted slightly in favor of Harris/Giddens over the past two games, but not significantly.

And, for the Buckeyes, likely starters, maybe, in bold:

Nbr Player Pos MPG FG% 3FG% FT% RPG APG PPG
2 Marc Loving F 33.2 42.1% 32.6% 75.0% 5.6 1.5 13.5
33 Kieta Bates-Diop F 30.4 45.8% 36.3% 81.0% 6.2 1.5 12.0
1 Jae’Sean Tate F 28.1 51.9% 33.3% 51.5% 6.1 1.4 11.0
4 Daniel Giddens C 18.7 48.6% 0.0% 40.5% 4.3 0.4 4.2
12 A.J. Harris G 13.0 35.2% 29.6% 65.2% 1.2 1.7 2.9
13 JaQuan Lyle G 28.3 39.3% 26.5% 62.5% 4.1 4.9 9.5
15 Kam Williams G 19.6 48.4% 47.7% 76.9% 1.7 1.0 7.6
32 Trevor Thompson C 16.8 51.1% 0.0% 78.3% 5.1 0.2 6.0
0 Mickey Mitchell F 9.1 38.5% 0.0% 50.0% 2.4 0.1 2.1
10 David Bell F 6.9 54.5% 0.0% 63.6% 2.0 0.1 1.7
14 Joey Lane G 1.6 14.3% 14.3% 50.0% 0.0 0.0 0.6

One thing of interest is whether Jae’Sean Tate, Daniel Giddens and Trevor Thompson can stay out of foul trouble and stay in the game. In the first meeting, each of them were whistled for 4 personal fouls. In Thursday’s game against Illinois, Tate fouled out while Giddens and Thompson each had 4 fouls.

Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET. The game will be televised on CBS (check local listings), can be followed on Gametracker and heard on 97.1.
