Buckeyes and Terrapins

The clash between to the Big Ten’s top two teams is set for Monday night when No. 7 Ohio State hosts No. 5 Maryland. The Buckeyes have won six-straight games and are looking to halt Maryland for the second time this season. Ohio State has an overall record of 18-4 and 10-1 in B1G play. Maryland has won nine-straight games since falling to the Buckeyes on Jan. 2 and come into the contest with a record of 21-2 overall and 10-1 in the conference.

The Match-up

The Buckeyes are second in the conference and are fourth in the country in scoring at 85.3 ppg. The Buckeyes have made 67 three-point field goals in the last seven games (9.6 per game). The Buckeyes have won 11-straight home games. Alston is 6th in school history with 1,966 career points. She is 34 points away from away from 2,000 in her career. In just over a season and a half, Mitchell is already 19th on OSU’s career scoring chart at 1,417

Since losing to Ohio State on Jan. 2 (80-71 in College Park), Maryland has has not lost. The Terrapins enter Monday’s game with a record of 21-2 overall and are tied atop the B1G standings with the Buckeyes at 10-1. The Terrapins lead the conference in a number of categories and is third in the country in scoring at team at 85.9 points per game. All-American candidate Shatori Walker-Kimbrough leads the team in scoring (19.5 ppg), steals (48) and blocks (26). Center Brionna Jones and Forward Brene Mosely are also averaging double figures, 14.6 points and 12.7 ppg respectively.

Prediction

These two teams are playing for the first #2 seed to be handed out for the NCAA’s and at the same time needing to have the upper hand in the national picture. Maryland comes in having been hungry and on a roll since losing to the Buckeyes and wanting to prove they are the better team.

The Buckeyes have been playing semi-inspired since their loss to Northwestern and didn’t have a typical game from Kelsey Mitchell in their last outing. They need this win to step back up to the number five spot and in time, with a conference tournament championship, could secure a #1 seed. It is doubtful they crack the top four but wins over Maryland and Sparty in B1G could boost their good side of the toughest schedule in the country. They have played all four of the Final Four teams from a year ago and Maryland is the only win.

The Buckeyes win big at home and Mitchell shines 89-84 Buckeyes.
