TCU LB Sammy Douglas out for year, DE James McFarland could be too

If there was one thing TCU had working in its favor a year ago en route to a 11-1 season and a trip to the Peach Bowl, it was the uncanny ability to stay healthy. One week into the 2015 season and already TCU could be down a couple of defensive players for the rest of the season.

On Tuesday TCU head coach Gary Patterson announced starting linebacker Sammy Douglas will miss the remainder of the season due to an undisclosed injury. Patterson also suggested defensive end James McFarland could also be out for some time, even as long as the rest of the season due to a foot injury. The loss of one of these two players would be a significant loss for a defense that is already tasked with filling key spots on the depth chart this season. Losing both would be even more complicated.

Last season saw McFarland lead TCU with seven sacks. He also returned an interception for a touchdown while also recording 12 tackles for a loss. Douglas had just 17 tackles last season but he made up for a lack of stats in playing experience as a junior. Without Douglas, TCU will turn to some youth with Mike Freeze or Ty Summers continuing to fill his spot on the depth chart.

TCU loses another starting LB, this one to ‘leave of absence’

TCU had entered Week 1 as the only FBS team whose linebackers had never started a game at this level. All of the sudden, both that unit’s depth and experience has taken a pair of significant blows.

Earlier this week, head coach Gary Patterson confirmed that starting linebacker Sammy Douglas will miss the remainder of the season due to an undisclosed injury. Wednesday, Patterson confirmed that another starting linebacker, Mike Freeze, hasn’t practiced the last couple of days and will be out for the foreseeable future.

Injury, though, won’t claim Freeze; instead, the true freshman is taking an indefinite leave of absence for undisclosed reasons. Tim Griffin of the San Antonio Express-News writes that “Patterson… said that Freeze was not dealing with a ‘discipline’ issue.”

With Douglas out for all of 2015 and Freeze indefinitely, the Horned Frogs will turn to redshirt freshman Ty Summers and true freshman Montel Wilson as their replacements. It will also mean that TCU will head into Week 2 as the only FBS team whose linebackers had never started a game at this level.

MAYBE HE GOT BEAT UP FOR DRINKING KEYSTONE LIGHT? I'm not a beer snob, but don't you dare bring canned deer piss like Keystone Light in my immediate vicinity. I refuse to associate with people who have nothing to lose.

Perhaps this is what happened to TCU senior DE Mike Tuaua? I couldn't fault him for disabling a threat like a stranger approaching him with a can of Keystone in his hand.

#TCU football player Mike Tuaua is accused of kicking and punching another student in face and body while trying to steal Keystone Light.

Arrest warrant: The student complained to #TCU officers of pain in his shoulder and face, and "immediately said, 'And they took my beer.'"

Now if it's proven that Tuaua assaulted a man to steal and drink Keystone Light... then I thinks sixty years in the clink would be a tough but fair sentence.

Gary Patterson says his player’s arrest “not even close” to Baylor player’s arrest

The only thing more lame than academic smack is player discipline smack – when fans do it. When coaches dip their toes in those waters, though, all the world’s fireworks simultaneously explode and angels get their wings.

On Monday, TCU defensive end Mike Tuaua (along with reserve wideout Andre Petties-Wilson)was arrested for allegedly beating a trio of TCU students at an off-campus party and making off with their Keystone Light.

Speaking for the first time on the incident, Frogs head coach Gary Patterson went to bat for his senior defensive end, saying he was the second only to Trevone Boykin among respected players in the locker room.

As far as person, I’m not going to let y’all say he’s a bad person. If he made a mistake, he made a mistake,” Patterson said on Tuaua #TCU

He then added another log to the raging bonfire that is mutual disdain between TCU and Baylor, saying Tuau’s case paled in comparison to the rape former Baylor defensive end Sam Ukwuachu was convicted of last month.
