TE Cade Stover (Official Thread)

Don't need as many LBs in a 4-2-5. Mitchell Melton has also moved to LJ's room and is a full-time DE.

With mainly 2 backers out there, and Chambers and Eichenberg getting the lions share of the praise so far, there isn't much space left out there. Not to mention Simon behind them, they've moved some other guys around like PG to get some reps in at Jack/Jet, it's definitely different but I certainly trust Knowles with this one.

“At the end of the day, it was really up to him,” Day said Tuesday. “And I think he saw just moving forward, he's got a huge ceiling at tight end. I think when you look at the work he's put in the past year and his skill set, he's got a chance to be a really good tight end. And I think the thing he would tell you is he wants to bring that same defensive mentality to the offense, and he can do that. He's strong, he's powerful, he's really athletic, got really good ball skills, was a really good high school basketball player. So he's back over at tight end and had a good couple practices.”

Because of his work ethic and athletic ability, I think this kid can excel on offense or defense. Just get him on the field to make plays. It'll be nice to see a rotation of TEs in this offense.

To feel comfortable continuing to play the tight end position that he’s played for Ohio State for most of the past two seasons, Cade Stover needed one more chance to play on defense.

Stover, who told Eleven Warriors in February that he missed playing linebacker “every day” for the past two years, got the opportunity to return to the linebacker position in the Rose Bowl, and performed well enough in that game – in which he recorded six tackles – that it appeared he would remain on the defensive side of the ball entering this spring.

After just four practices this spring, Stover decided to move back to tight end, which he now once again believes is the position where he can help Ohio State most this season and where he has the brightest future as an NFL prospect.

Stover says he would have always wondered if he should have switched back to defense, however, if he hadn’t given it one more shot.

“100 percent,” Stover said Thursday when asked if he needed one more chance to play defense. “I had to be on my terms. I had to be at peace with it. I knew if I wasn't, then it’s always going to be ‘What if this was that? What if this was that?’ And I felt good about it.”

Just sayin': Seems like his heart is still on the defensive side; however, he is playing for the "long term" here, i.e. best chance for the NFL, etc.

This is cool:

“It’s such a great opportunity and an honor to be a part of this great race and tradition in my hometown,” said Stover, who graduated from Lexington High School. “As someone who grew up here, I know how much Mid-Ohio means to our community, so I’m really excited to be part of the action on race day.”

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is honored to announce current Ohio State tight end and Lexington (OH) High School graduate Cade Stover as honorary grand marshal of next weekend’s Honda Indy 200 Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R on Sunday, July 3.

As grand marshal, Stover will announce the most famous words in racing, "Drivers, start your engines!" as well as participate in other pre-race ceremonies for the 80-lap NTT INDYCAR SERIES race at Mid-Ohio. The race will be broadcast globally with live coverage nationally starting at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

  • Holding down the first-team tight end spot for much of the day, Stover made multiple big plays in the passing game, getting free for an 80-yard touchdown during 7-on-7 reps and following it up with another chunk gain later on.
Players who took first-team reps with the punting unit included Mitch Rossi, Mitchell, Eichenberg, Chambers, Xavier Johnson, Kourt Williams, Fleming, Smith-Njigba, Gee Scott Jr., Cade Stover and Bennett Christian.

Cade is undoubtedly a great athlete and plenty physical. If he has honed in the TE position skills, he could have himself a nice season. Think the staff made the right move with Stover to TE when they knew they needed a succession plan to Ruckert.
