Made the official move to DE against the Scarlet Knights. Said that this was his new position from here on. Thoughts?

ShowMeBuck You know what? Chicken butt.

Based solely on quality depth at LB it sounds good. Also, he seems to bring a unique skill set to the D Line and I love the idea of Larry working him into a monster.

I've always thought Cade would inevitably move to the DE position. I personally think his potential is highest there and we can utilize him as a hybrid like we've done with Young this year.

Yeah, I can see him as a Hubbard type player for us at DE. He has the frame to fill out and with us losing Young and Cooper adding a guy like Cade will help bolster our DE depth.

I agree that it was just a matter of time. I think that the encouraging news is that the depth is really strong at LB. We should have everyone returning next year with the exception of Harrison (Hoping Hilliard gets another year).

Having Cade at DE will pay dividends down the road.

Before entering the Ohio State football program in the summer, Cade Stover imagined he’d fit into the defense as a strongside linebacker. During the summer, preseason and beginning of his freshman season, he slotted into the second level of the defense.

But against Rutgers on Saturday, he played defensive end, picking up one tackle.

“We wanted to experiment with him,” Hafley said. “We've been doing it for a little bit in practice. He's been doing that a little bit on the scout team. So we kind of just were trying to figure out exactly what he can do, where he's best suited. I think we'll continue to work through that and see what the best spot is for him. But he's very talented. He's got a lot of versatility. He's strong. He can run. So we're trying to find the best place for him right now.”

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Stover has the natural frame of a defensive end. The next step, provided he doesn’t shift back to linebacker, would be to add weight. Given Ohio State’s depth at linebacker, especially with the possibility of Hilliard returning for a sixth year, Stover sticking with his move to the defensive line would seem to make logical sense.

LB to DE? From what I remember, seeing him play MLB/Middle Safety on D and QB in HS so he seems to have A LOT of athleticism. Carpenter is my first thought and Thad comes to mind too.

but the real question LB or DE..

    Why not both?

2019 in review: Throughout the offseason and first nine games of the season, Stover was a strongside linebacker. Then, the Sunday before the Buckeyes played Rutgers, Johnson brought him to join the linemen as a defensive end. He stuck at the new position. Stover played 35 snaps in four games, including a season-high 22 snaps in the blowout of the Scarlet Knights. He had three tackles.

A look toward 2020: Like Potter, Stover could find himself blocked by a sizable list of returners at defensive end. The other, most pressing obstacle? The Lexington High School graduate is learning a new position. Ahead of the Fiesta Bowl, he openly discussed the steep learning curve ahead. So while he might an intriguing combination of size and speed, Stover might spend most of his second season at Ohio State developing rather than contributing during meaningful downs.

Long-term outlook: In a perfect world, Ohio State would love for him to have a career similar to that of Sam Hubbard, another high school safety who played linebacker in college before ending up at defensive end. That’s a high bar, but it doesn’t seem out of reach for somebody once ranked as the 114th-best recruit in the 2019 cycle. How he develops this offseason will play a significant role in determining how quickly he can earn a spot in the rotation. Regardless of when that happens, he undoubtedly has a high ceiling.
