TE Jeff Ellis (Official Thread)

Oneshot

Goes For Three
I was walking through the Cal campus wearing my Ohio State sweater, and this construction worker waves his arms at me. There's a lot of construction going on, and I have my iPod in, so I thought he was telling me to get off the street.

Instead, as I'm walking to the sidewalk, he waves at me to come toward him.

He suddenly throws me a high five and says "Go Buckeyes!" to which I respond "Go Buckeyes."

He then proceeds to say "Are you from Ohio?" "No, man, but my parents are."

"Oh, nice. I used to play at Ohio State."

"You're kidding."

"No man, I played from '87-'91! Under John Cooper and Earle Bruce. I played with Carlos Snow -- you heard of him?"

"Of course I know who Carlos Snow is... What did you play? Center? Guard?" (This guy was massive)

"No. I only got this big after playing ball. I used to play tight end. Then I played with the LA SaberCats, and then I stopped football."

So... I tried looking online, but I couldn't find a Greg Ellis. Anyone remember him?

Just thought it was kinda cool... Buckeyes all over the world.

I remember him.
Real good guy. From the Louisville area IIRC. Very good TE. Was All Big Ten as a sophmore. Then after a knee injury and later getting kneecapped. He was never the same.

Had NFL talent, size, speed, but was never the same after the injury.

Was always a very nice guy.

Will get more for you.

correction was never first team all big ten.

Ellis was a fine TE in the Cooper years. Had some injury problems that hurt:biggrin: his NFL future. Great kid! Son of a famous boxer, I believe. Jimmy Ellis?

Correct. Jimmy Ellis actually held the WBA Heavyweight title after it was stripped from Muhammed Ali. He lost the title to Joe Frazier at the end of a 'tournament' that was arranged to consolidate the titles. After Ali returned, Ellis lost to Ali, whom he had beaten when they were young amateurs in Louisville.

Yes, his name is Jeff Ellis. His father was Jimmy Ellis, a professional heavyweight champion boxer Here is a photo of his Dad with Ali. I grew up in the same neighborhood with the Ellis family. Jeff was the youngest. My parents went to Seneca High School with then Muhammad Ali. Jeff looks so much like his Dad. He is a wonderful guy, and his boys will be the next generation of talented athletes.

7. JEFF ELLIS, 1988
The son of heavyweight boxing champion Jimmy Ellis, Jeff Ellis' 1988 season remains near the top of Ohio State's record books. In his sophomore year, Ellis recorded 492 yards (No. 5 in program history) on 40 receptions (No. 4 in program history) while accounting for nearly 24% of the team's receiving yards (No. 5 in program history).

Ellis finished his career with 863 yards and 70 catches. He tragically passed away in 2018 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
