TE Louis Irizarry (official thread)

RLC65: You pose a frequent conundrum in college sports: young men with great talent coming to (you name the college), and, being unable to make the emotional adjustment to that environment. Perhaps in the past, more control (players required to live in Ohio Stadium dorms, for instance), masked this type of behavior? Seems like espn/cnn sports has a continual running dialogue on criminal activities by one player or another. Most, if not all instances involve assaults...and most of these are of a standard nature: the player assaults either a female or the average, non-jock joe who happens to p-off the player. Most assaults involve booze; most are fairly late in the average day. JT's adage about "after 10p.m." is there for a proven reason.

This and the previous felony accusation on Mr. I. are actions of a pure bully. Strong over weak. My guess is this kid is impulsive and very angry at the least...if charges hold. If that, he's gone. Probably from campus too.

I have no idea how a CF Head Coach or staff can predict this type of behavior other than to require some type of voluntary background check, or if that is too offensive, administer some routine psycho-type tests. Even these would be controversial.

If charges are true, I for one hope JT hammers the lad swiftly and surely with "you're fired!"

Why can't Ohio State enjoy the spotlight...

First the National Champions then...MC and his mouth and legal problems now, the fact that we set a record with the number of players to the NFL and now this. You have got to believe that it only hurts the football reputation!

Not so sure I agree. 99% of college football fans have never heard of therse guys. It's not like this is gonna be on the front page of USA Today or the crappy NY Times or something. Incidents like this happen all the time in college football. There's not a whole lot you can do besides respond swiftly and with a stern fist.

Yeah. Buckeye fans obviously remember this kind of stuff, and of course our top enemies like scum and scum south will run with it, and it might get a brief mention on ESPN.com, but it's not like some unique incident.

You guys!

You had me going for a while. The I looked at the calendar.

May fool!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is unreasonable to expect that the occurrence of such incidence will be more or less at OSU than any other school. (I think JoPa had something like seven DUIs to deal with last season.) What matters is how it is handled.

Louis could have made a difference in how this Offense worked. A huge difference. I'll miss him, but let's see if Hoobler or Nicol can step up.

Anyone have access to the Dispatch website? There is a story on the site but I can't access...a cut and paste would be appreciated

Two Ohio State University football players, accused of beating up an OSU student while trying to take his wallet at 3 a.m. today, are in jail, charged with robbery.

One of the players, tight end Louis Anthony Irizarry, was on probation stemming from another assault last year. Irizarry is a freshman from Youngstown.

The other is running back Ira Bell-Guilford, a freshman from South Orange, N.J. Both have been charged with one felony count each of robbery.

OSU police alleged the pair beat up Kenneth Whitwell, who lives in Baker Hall, at the corner of College Road and W. 19th Avenue on campus.

Whitwell called OSU police to report the attack.

Whitwell's head, right forearm and wrist were injured, according to court and police records.

Irizarry and Guilford are scheduled to appaar in Franklin County Municipal Court at 9 a.m Monday.

statement from JT on official site

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State sophomore football student-athletes Louis Irizarry and Ira Guilford have been suspended indefinitely following their arrest this weekend in Columbus, Jim Tressel, Ohio State head coach, said Saturday.

Tressel issued the following statement regarding the situation.

"We are aware of the situation," Tressel said. "We view it as very serious. We are looking into it aggressively to learn more about the facts. In the mean time both players have been suspended indefinitely. It appears likely they could lose their privilege to play for Ohio State in 2004."

Irizarry, a 6-5, 235-pound tight end from Youngstown, Ohio, and Guilford, a 6-0, 190-pound tailback from Hoboken, N.J., both played as true freshmen for the Buckeyes in 2003.

Guilford played in five games. He gained 64 yards on 28 carries. Irizarry played in seven games, primarily on special teams.

It's too bad Izzy backed out of his verbal to Miami - this guy has issues.

I don't like either of their chances of remaining at OSU and on the team. If what's being alleged is even remotely true, I don't want them there.

I'm tired of knuckleheads dragging OSU through the mud.

The AP now has the story. I think I'm gonna vomit. If everything proves to be true, then JT needs to step up STRONG.

Two Ohio State Football Players Arrested

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Two Ohio State football players were arrested on Saturday after a student said they assaulted and robbed him.

Sophomores Louis Irizarry and Ira Guilford were both suspended from the team indefinitely, and coach Jim Tressel said "it appears likely they could lose their privilege to play for Ohio State in 2004."

According to police records, the two were arrested after another student, Kenneth Graham, reported that he was assaulted on campus at 3 a.m.

Guilford, 18, a 6-foot, 190-pound tailback from Hoboken, N.J., played in five games last year, rushing for 68 yards on 28 carries. Irizarry, 19, a 6-5, 235-pound tight end from Youngstown, played in seven games, mostly on special teams.

"We are aware of the situation," Tressel said in a statement. "We view it as very serious. We are looking into it aggressively to learn more about the facts."

Being a nice guy like Tressel doesn't work with some people; it is seen as a weakness and something to take advantage of.

We'll see how weak they view him after he kicks their ass off the team permanently. One of our BP members PM'd earlier and said that Irizarry had delinquency and fighting problems back in high school, so there is a definite pattern here. He needs to go, and he needs to go yesterday...

I remember when we were recruiting LI reading about what a great student he was, how he was going to be an engineering major and how you couldn't find a nicer kid. I'm all for waiting for the facts to come out, and Clarity is right, we'll probably never know the whole story, but I think it's safe to say the kid isn't too bright. Once was bad enough, twice is ridiculous.
