TE Luke Farrell (3rd Team All B1G, Jacksonville Jaguars)

4. LUKE FARRELL, TE (1,206 SNAPS)
One of the Buckeyes’ most quietly reliable players, Farrell has started 24 games over the past two seasons – 10 in 2018 and every game last season – while leading the team in tight end snaps played in both years.

Farrell split snaps with Jeremy Ruckert (who is now the seventh-most experienced player on Ohio State’s offense with 533 career snaps) last year and will do the same again in 2020, but there’s no question Farrell will be viewed as one of the leaders on the Buckeyes’ offense as a fifth-year senior. He might not catch a ton of passes – despite all his snaps, he has just 29 career receptions – but he’ll play a substantial role in assisting the offensive line in the running game.

LUKE FARRELL, C.J. SAUNDERS AMONG OHIO STATE'S CONFERENCE-HIGH 164 BIG TEN DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS

For the fifth year in a row, Ohio State leads the conference in Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.

The Buckeyes had 164 athletes earn the designation as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for the 2019-20 academic year. They smashed the previous record set last year of 131 athletes honored with the award.

Every Big Ten Distinguished Scholar must have been an Academic All-Big Ten honoree the prior academic year, enrolled in their current university for at least a year and achieved at least a 3.70 grade-point average the prior academic year, excluding summer classes.

Tight end Luke Farrell, wide receiver C.J. Saunders and combo guard Danny Hummer are among this year's honorees.

Of the 164 players recognized, 26 were for achieving 4.0 GPAs during the 2019-20 academic year: Leon Cao (fencing), Gabriela Cecchini (fencing), Aleksandra Kolmykova (fencing), Luke Farrell (football), Ben Schmiesing (football), Adeena Shears (women’s golf), Nevin Adamski (women’s gymnastics), Claire Gagliardi (women’s gymnastics), Tatum Skaggs (women’s ice hockey), Emily Nothnagle (pistol), Megan Cymanski (rowing), Allison Krish (rowing), Grace Libben (rowing), Michaela Nordhaus (rowing), Mitch Bergman (men’s soccer), Selina Vickery (women’s soccer), Spencer Sansom (softball), Evan Stapp (men’s swimming and diving), Kendyl Ferrara (women’s swimming and diving), Quinn Fike (women’s swimming and diving), Lara Tarvit (women’s swimming and diving), Luke Landis (men’s track and field), Alexa Jankowsky (women’s track and field), Mia Grunze (women’s volleyball), Lauren Witte (women’s volleyball) and Kollin Moore (wrestling).

LUKE FARRELL, TIGHT END

  • Farrell said this offseason was frustrating not knowing whether Ohio State would get to play, but he and his teammates leaned on each other, and they're happy they got the result they wanted.
  • With no fans in Ohio Stadium this year, Farrell said he and his teammates will have to do a good job of creating their own energy.
  • “I think as an offense, we can be one of the most prolific offenses we've seen around here, if not in all of college football.”
  • Farrell said Jake Hausmann has “made huge improvements in every aspect of his game,” which the Buckeyes have seen in practice even though he hasn't had a ton of opportunities to show that on game day.
  • Farrell said he isn't worried about his individual numbers because if Ohio State's offense is succeeding, that will take care of itself.
  • Like Wilson, Farrell said Justin Fields' development as a leader is what has stood out to him most between last year and this year.
  • Farrell said he didn't realize how good he was at football until he got a call from Urban Meyer in high school.
