Scout $ - Vannett Is One To Watch In Ohio
By Bill Greene
Posted Feb 7, 2010

OFFERS: Indiana, Kentucky, Toledo, Bowling Green, Ball State, Northwestern... INTEREST: Ohio State, Cincy, Illini, Michigan St., Boston College, Wisconsin... Attended OSU junior day last week & has been asked to come back for a meeting with Tressel this week or next... All interest has been as a TE & that's where he see himself playing... He wants to play in an offense that throws to the TE...

My guess is OSU will want to see guys like Taylor and Vannett in camp before offering, although if Vannett goes back for a one-on-one with JT in the next couple of weeks, that could mean and offer is going out.

New 2011 offers

I was talking to Mark Porter about what the class was missing on as far as talent is concerned. This is an amazing bad class for backs. I don't know if we will see an Ohio back offered by Big Ten schools. I don't recall that ever happening, but I digress. Another position the class is short on is tight end. The focus has been on Strongsvilles Ray Hamilton. He is a really nice player but I question the listed size of 6-5 225. Looks more like 6-3 215 or so to me. He looks more like an H-back type. We need a block first tight end here. Run the ball and go down the field to the receivers. That is our offense. Tight end is not going to ever be a focal point. Notice the offenses players like Ben Koyack want. The tight end can be the primary on so many pass plays in the offenses where fans see the tight end catching a lot of footballs. That is never going to happen here. The tight end is always going to be a chain mover and a checkdown receiver in this offense. We will never take advantage of an elite tight end prospect. Not like what fans want to see. That would mean changing our pass offense. It does not mean a tight end cannot be successful in this offense. He is never going to catch 50 balls. What he does after making what catches he gets is up to him. Mark threw out the name Darion Bryant. I mentioned that I liked Nick Vannett better than either one of them. The next day we see an offer to Vannett. This is what our offense needs. It is very simple. Look what he does on the second play in this film. He also shows he can catch the ball quite well and can run with it afterward.

2011 Nick Vannett - Westerville Central - Promo

This is just what the Buckeyes need, a homegrown kid who is a good enough receiver to get offers from tight end friendly passing offenses but is a top drawer blocker.

More new 2011 offers

I am surprised to see that Nick Vannett is more open than I thought he was on first blush. He is talking about other schools. I have been trying to tell fans that we would not use one of the elite tight ends in a way that is going to draw one of them here. It is not what we do in our offense anymore than Dave is part of the Florida offense. It is not what they do. We don't feature the tight end. Losing a player like Vannett would be very disturbing. He is not just another tight end that would be a lineman in another system, but he would not fall into the elite athletic tight end category. We need to nail down kids like this. It is not a matter of not getting an elite tight end prospect. It is a bigger deal than that. The talent level at tight end is really falling off, and I don't know what can be done about it. You can say we could throw to the tight end more. It is not that simple. Our passing offense is designed to go down the field to the wide receivers. Throwing to the tight end more changes the offense. We are going to give the tight end 25 catches or so every year. When you say throw to the tight end more that means making the tight end the primary on some plays. You need to keep in mind that means not throwing the ball to one of our wide outs. The staff needs to find a way to get this one done.
