Short-haired Nicol
It had been awhile since tight end Rory Nicol mingled with the media, and it was tough to recognize him at first with his new hairdo. Even his teammates had trouble with that when he showed up a couple of weeks ago minus his long hair.

"I walked in and I didn't recognize him; everybody was like, 'Who is this kid?' because he'd had hair all the way down to his shoulders," tight end Jake Ballard said. "But I think he still wishes he had his hair long."

Nicol said it had to be done.

"I just cut it because I was going to some job fairs and such, and some people were telling my boy Larry Romanoff (OSU assistant athletic director), 'Hey, we like this Rory kid, but if he interviews with us, tell him to cut his hair,'" Nicol said. "Actually, don't tell Tress this, but I left class one day spontaneously to go get it cut."

The interview was for a future sales position, said Nicol, who is entering his senior year.

"Obviously, I want to continue playing (on into the NFL), but it's always good to plan ahead," he said.

Off Campus With . . . OSU tight end Rory Nicol
by Doug Lesmerises
Monday September 01, 2008

The lowdown: Nicol was named Ohio State's Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Youngstown State, even though he caught just one pass for 14 yards. After years of hearing that this was the season the tight ends were going to be involved more in the passing game, he should know not to get his hopes up.

Rory Nicol.Best concert I've ever been to: "Kenny Chesney, in 2005 or 2006, at Crew Stadium in Columbus."

Concert I'd most like to see now: "I've got a big crush on Fergie. She's a health nut, so she'd definitely keep me in shape."

Favorite video game: "Wii bowling. I've bowled a 300 on there a few times. I've bowled a 100, too."

Favorite NFL team and why: "The Steelers. It's where I'm from [Beaver, Pa.], and they've always been a great organization from the top down. The Steelers go back to the foundation of pro football, the Steel Curtain and all that."

Favorite Web site: "There's a gas-price Web site on msn.com. I'll go on there and search by zip code and then pop into the cheapest gas station that I'm driving near."

My position coach yells at me when I . . .: "Get my feet too close together on my second step. You need to keep them apart for balance, and I always get them too close."

Fred Squillante Dispatch

Rory Nicol grew up in Beaver, Pa., the youngest of three children, and the only son. How he rose from that family environment to become the starting tight end for Ohio State was one of several mysteries he cleared up in a quick question-and-answer session recently. But first came the subject of his hair:
Q You had great crop of long hair a year ago. Why did it disappear?
A I went to a career network night, I met guys from a lot of companies, and they all told (football program assistant) Larry Romanoff, who helped me out with my resume, that 'Hey, we really like this Rory Nicol kid. But if he comes back, make sure he cuts his hair.' So, I got it cut.
Q Does that mean, as a senior five years into college, you're now a conformist?

So with Rory missing a week or two, who gets the nod in a two TE formation? Aren't Smith and JD Larson the only other TEs beside the freshman, DiLillo? This could be a problem at Wisky no?

Just curious what the experts think we'll do next week. Thanks guys.
