Team USA (Official Thread)

U.S. blows out Serbia for gold

Kyrie Irving made all six 3-pointers and scored 26 points, and the U.S. repeated as world champion for the first time by crushing Serbia 129-92 on Sunday in the Basketball World Cup.

They have won 63 straight games -- 45 in official FIBA events and 18 in exhibition play -- and are automatically qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

World Cup in China: USA just beat Turkey 93-92 in OT to go up 2-0 in their group. Next up is Japan this Thursday.

Here's an account of how the game went:

Team USA Avoids Another Disaster By Holding On To Beat Turkey In A Wild Finish

giphy-1.gif

Jesus Christ, that was wayyyyyy more stressful than it should have been considering the US were 21.5 point favorites entering this game. For many non Celtics fans this performance against Turkey might raise from red flags and be cause for concern. For the rest of us, we saw this exact formula play out 1,000 times during the Celtics season so it’s no surprise things continued here. I won’t try and sugarcoat it, Team USA played like shit and really didn’t deserve to win this game. They shot the ball like a bunch of assholes (35/35%), none worse than the Celtics foursome, but in the end it was Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum that saved the US from another embarrassing loss in FIBA competition. I am all for exciting basketball, but I don’t think my heart was prepared for overtime where everything is coming down to pressure FTs. It’s only the beginning of September for crying out loud, I shouldn’t be this stressed.

The entire ending of this game was ridiculous though. We had Pop reliving his decision to take out Tim Duncan in that Finals only to watch a key offensive rebound kill his team. He took out Myles Turner who I dunno seems like a good rebounder, and then with around 12 seconds left Turkey got a huge offensive rebound put back to go up two. Not great! Then Khris Middleton wasn’t even close on a wide open three which honestly isn’t all that surprising given how he’s shot in international play, only to be bailed out by a HUGE Kemba Walker offensive rebound who then got it to Tatum who didn’t settle for a long two and instead got fouled taking a three. Game over right? Wrong! Of course he missed the second FT and we found ourselves heading to OT. This is why I always say FTs are important.

After some Kemba cooking early in the OT, the US found themselves in another tough spot when Myles Turner fucked up the inbounds play and Joe Harris was forced to foul. Well due to FIBA rules this now meant up 1, Turkey was going to have two shots and the ball. Everything coming down to FTs once again, and Turkey choked worse than Tatum. Missed them both. Marcus Smart immediately fouled to put Cedi Osman at the line who….choked. He went on to miss both and Jayson Tatum had the biggest rebound of the game over multiple players, went coast to coast and found Middleton for a beautiful transition play that led to two free throws. He made them, Team USA wins. Disaster avoided.

But shit man, they need to be a whole lot better than what we saw in this game. I’ll take the win, but you don’t exactly feel great given how this team looked overall. Defense had issues, offense was stagnant, turnovers, it was overall pretty gross. You give this type of performance against someone like Serbia or Spain and you are going to get your ass destroyed.

Now just like we do after every game let’s review how the Celts did.

With the victory, Team USA completes a clean sweep of the opening group stage, and will now progress to the next phase of the tournament. The Czech Republic, who earlier secured a 91-76 victory against Turkey, will be the other team coming out of Group E.

Both teams will now be part of Group K, together with the top two teams of Group F from the first round. Brazil won Group F after defeating Montenegro by a score of 84-73 to end the first round with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Greece side will complete the roster for Group K, as they have just come out victorious in their do-or-die battle against New Zealand, 103-97.

Team USA will be faced with a more formidable set of opponents in the next stage, and they will definitely need to be at their best to avoid any unwanted slip-ups at this point in the tournament. The Americans will face Giannis and the Greeks on Saturday.

Team USA clinches worst-ever major-tournament finish with loss to Serbia

This is how far Team USA has fallen.

The United States’ 94-89 loss to Serbia on Thursday ensures the Americans will finish seventh or eighth in the 2019 FIBA World Cup – their worst-ever finish in a major event. Their previous low was sixth in the 2002 World Championship.

Team USA will face the Czech Republic-Poland loser Saturday in the seventh/eighth-place game. The consolation end of the consolation bracket will provide no consolation. USA Basketball operates on a gold-or-bust standard, and this edition fell way short.
