By Gary Housteau

Longtime high school mentor and visionary Ted Ginn Sr. was approved by the Cleveland Municipal School Board this week to move forward with and educational and prepartory academy that will be formed and shaped in his own image. Just how the academy will get off the ground and when and whether or not it will be a member of the OHSAA are still in the process of being determined or worked out.

Can someone with a premium subscription summarize this, and does this have any potential to effect Glenville recruiting?

He's going to open up an academy to help kids (frosh-seniors) get ready for college... with campus living and everything. He won't be coaching at Glenville after this year probably.

And we thought the Glenville pipeline was useful... imagine what it will be like when even more stars come there to get their academics straightened out. We won't have to pass on great players b/c of grades nearly as often.

So is this going to be like University school?? All boys, and that kind of stuff? If so that school will definatly win state championship because alot of kids will want to go there. Hopefully this gets approved that'd be another great Ohio Football team to go along with our other great teams.

Details seem sketchy at this point, but some think it might be a charter school with money from the gov't... also many of the future pros from Glenville will probably donate money to the school. Bringing them back for visits as well, including Ginn's son - arguably the most electrifying player to play at OSU and fastest anywhere since Deion, talk about a reason to inspire kids to come to this school.

Ginn Sr. Surgery

Glenville's Ginn recovering after surgical procedure

Glenville football coach Ted Ginn Sr. is recovering at University Hospitals after undergoing a surgical procedure to remove a growth earlier this week, Cleveland school district official Leonard B. Jackson said.

Jackson, the retiring Commissioner of Interscholastic Athletics for Cleveland Municipal Schools, visited Ginn on Thursday night. Although Jackson was cautious of speculating, he believes Ginn, 49, will begin radiation treatment soon.

Ginn's family declined to be interviewed. The family released a statement through a hospital spokesperson saying Ginn is doing fine. At this time, the family added, it does not wish to release specifics about Ginn's condition.

Ginn's status for next week's season opener at Mentor remains unclear. Glenville is a consensus top five pick among Ohio's Division I teams. Longtime Tarblooders assistant coach Matt Chinchar is leading practices in Ginn's absence.

"Ted hadn't been feeling well for a while now," said Jackson, a longtime friend who coached Ginn during his middle school days at Patrick Henry.

Resting in the hospital Thursday, Ginn told Jackson he appreciates everyone's concern and asks to be kept in their prayers.

Meanwhile, the team has been practicing as scheduled this week.

"I was devastated when I heard the news," said Tarblooders' All-American senior defensive lineman Robert Rose. "But now it is on us, as seniors, to step up and rally around each other and coach Ginn. When the father in a family goes down, the sons have to stand tall. And we are a family."

Chinchar said the players have the opportunity to show "Dad" that they have listened to what he has preached, that they cannot slack off from being a family.

Ginn, the father of Ohio State football standout Ted Ginn Jr., has molded Glenville's program into an Ohio power.

In 1999, the Tarblooders became the first football team from the Cleveland district to advance to the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs. A year later, Glenville became the first team from the Cleveland district to win a playoff game. Last fall it was another first as the Tarblooders advanced to the state semifinals by defeating perennial powers St. Edward and St. Ignatius on consecutive weekends.

Upon hearing about his friend and colleague, veteran East Tech coach Gerry Stueber said he and his coaches got together and said a prayer for Ginn.

"I work my tail off, but Ted Ginn Sr. is the hardest-working guy in the Senate [Athletic League]," Stueber said. "The product he puts out on the field is phenomenal and he does a great job getting his kids into college. Ted's a great promoter for his kids and the [Glenville] community."

I love what Coach Ginn has done to the Glenville guys, he's really instilled some work ethic and I love that the team acts like a family...the Tarblooders play their guts out and they play to win.

Best wishes for one of the best coaches around.
