My personal opinion of him aside... think Herman could be successful if given time to learn how to be a HC at a blue blood, and show stability to recruits and elite asst coach hires.
But the likelihood of that happening seems small... if Ash can't save his ass in next year or two, the Herman experiment will be finished.

Can’t that be said about most coaches ? And with how much coaches are paid now at blue bloods they shouldn’t be expected to have much time. When you agree to be paid one of the 10 highest coaching salaries in a state with an unbelievable amount of talent than you better put up or ship up fast(especially since he should already have great connections since previously being at Houston).
I think some guys can coach blue blood programs, and those guys are few and far between. Herman may have hit a ceiling of AAC Or middle of the road P5 schools, and that’s ok. But his name won’t be on many big time school lists if(and when) he fails at UT. He has almost every advantage known to man, and is looking very average and in over his head even at times. A conference where they were one of the main 2 teams, is now making them look like an also-ran, and that’s not good.

No, I don't think that goes for anyone. Helton, for example, will never be a good HC.
I think it goes both ways. Texas knew Herman was an unseasoned HC with only 2yrs Mid Major experience and not enough clout to bring in big name coordinators when they hired him... surely they saw the staff he had at Houston and the staff he was able to retain/hire at Texas.
That falls on AD as much as anyone.
He had a great 1st year at Houston, a good 2nd year, upset OU out of nowhere and they bought all-in on the sizzle and expected him to own OU from day 1. That's Baylor-esque behavior and scUM-esque delusion.
I don't think he has as many advantages as their fan base imagines. What reputation does Texas have for sending kids to NFL vs. OU or LSU?
They have five P5 schools in the State, four in the same conference... that dilutes the kind of fan loyalty we take for granted in Ohio. Impossible to put up a fence in that situation... similar situation in FL: FSU / Miami / UF are all about the same... and CA with USC / UCLA / Stanford / Cal. They have to share the talent pool, and the decreased loyalty also opens doors to national recruiting.
The L10 is just as dead of a conference as ACC. OU : Clemson-lite. Most kids are going to pick OU or SEC. The rest get shared between national recruiting and the P5 in-State schools, of which Texas is but 1. And not as attractive as they imagine.
If Texas wants to get back in the game, they need to take a Wisconsin approach for 3-5 years. Build up a reputation of stability and excellence in certain position groups. Become known for something.
Fire the bad assistants, pay the good ones to stay.
Attract recruits with more than Saudi Arabian academic rankings, Confederate statues, and whatever tf those weird ass football statues are.
Devote their season to beating OU from the first day of Spring practice, and nothing else.
IMO Herman is the kind of guy that could compete for recruits on delivering a sexy offense that puts skill players in The League... and Ash is one of the best DCs around.
But do they have the time to figure it out? I highly doubt it. Texas is too impatient. And they love their weird statues and "history" too much.

Herman was a hot name on the rise when Tejas hires him and there are countless examples of coaches having little big time experience but were heating it up at a mid major (Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Chip Kelly, the list can go on). I think he’s been in over his head like Helton, James Franklin, Mike Locksley, Lane Kiffin, and even though the jury may still be out: Scott Frost.
Texas for a very long time was the king of TX. Their fan loyalty is almost unparalleled in TX, because the rest are essentially little brothers. Mack a Brown had no problems putting up a fence, and even in his last few terrible seasons signed some great UT recruiting classes and had the class sewn up with the best players in TX almost a year before NSD. I lived in Austin during Browns last 2yrs and he signed the #1(#2 nationally) and #2(#17 nationally) class in the conference With almost all kids from TX. And this was when aTm was still in the B12 and Stoops was still pumping out talent. And still he was landing top talent, but the problem was developing the talent and it seems to be the same issue under Herman. The same kids with UT offers also have them for OU and many SEC schools(and also tOSU), but Herman isn’t developing what he has landed, that’s on him. The fact that he’s let TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech surpass him is purely on him at this point, as he should be able to compete with OU and stay on top
