So, is "The Eyes of Texas" a racist song? I don't know. But how can the lyrics be taken as racist?

The Eyes of Texas are upon you
All the live-long day
The eyes of Texas are upon you
just to pass the time away
Can't you hear the whistle blowin'?

Can't you hear the captain shouting

It's not the lyrics so much as it is in the history of how the song was created and performed:

Few would say those lyrics are racist, but UT Professor Dr. Edmond Gordan explained the nodes of racism won't be found in the "The Eyes of Texas" lyrics but in the song’s past.

Gordan said "The Eyes of Texas" was originally a satirical song once performed at minstrel shows, which are comedic variety shows featuring white performers in blackface.

The Texas Cowboys school spirit association was a key social group on the UT campus for decades. In the past, Gordan said members would put on blackface and perform a sort of a minstrel show each year for their schoolmates.

Gordan said the "The Eyes of Texas" is a satirical rendition of Confederate commander Robert E. Lee’s saying “the eyes of the south are upon you,” which was made popular on the UT campus by former university president William Lambdin Prather.

I'm just going to say that, whatever side of that debate we fall on, we can all take great pleasure in UT ripping itself apart at the seams over it while doing huge harm to themselves on the recruiting trail. I'm having a fucking difficult time seeing a downside to all this.

Oh this sets up to benefit a good number of schools, mainly: OSU, aTm, OU, Bama, LSU for the top prospects. It's going to be hard for Sark to walk into some African American households and try to defend this. Some won't care, but I predict a good number will look elsewhere
