Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Re: Ohio State coach Thad Matta has agreed to a revised contract which will give him a 10 percent increase to more than $3.2 million annually and includes academic bonuses and more stringent wording about NCAA violations.

and

the five-time Big Ten champion coach will be under contract through July 2019.

Based on what he has done in the past, his longevity here, and the cost of a buyout; I'm thinking he gets one more year.

I can live with that. One more year in the grand scheme of things is not going to matter.

He should be allowed to go out with a nice package and all the respect they can convey. He's earned that.

Any postseason will just prolong the misery. This team stinks and it's gonna get worse before it gets better. Each time they go out and run around directionless for 40 minutes just plunges the program further into irrelevance.

Yeah, they should be given extra games in the postseason because they haven't embarrassed themselves and their fans as much as possible yet. Woohoo!

I guess I forgot to use the sarcasm font. The only way I want to see this team play postseason is if they somehow pull the B1G tourney out of their asses.

I'm hoping Thad steps down and Archie Miller's phone rings before his alma mater - NC State - can get a truck load of cash to Dayton.

True but hopefully Gene has someone already lined up. And I'd LOVE to know just what the hell happened these past five or so years that's led to THIS kind of dip. I don't think I've ever seen fall like this in either basketball or football. Sure a coach gets lucky here or there at times but they start to peter out fairly quickly. Just crazy to witness first hand.

I think part of the issue is the talent level in Ohio has dropped off in terms of elite talent. The McDonald's AAs just aren't there anymore, save the Kennard/Bragg duo. Ohio is realisticly looking into the 2020s before it produces a McDonald's AA again.

I think the big thing that hurt Thad & is gonna be a problem for whoever is here next is that the Indiana pipeline got closed. Deshaun Thomas, Oden, Conley are probably guys we couldn't land anymore. Indiana (even with Crean's struggles but it's not a dumpster fire now), Purdue & especially with UK under Cal cut off that pipeline. Matta really benifited from those programs being weaker in the 2000s.

Trey Lyles, James Blackmon, Marquis Teague, Tyler Zeller, etc. might have been Buckeyes if this was 2009.

Tough for anyone to go into Indiana & beat Cal, Crean, Pitino, Painter for a McDonalds AA

The lack of getting it right on the 4 year program guys since Aaron Craft is what has to be the backbone of the program if the one & dones aren't rolling in. The staff can't either identify or develop the 3-4 star guys that Compliment a Russell or carry the team without him. The Diebler, Craft, Lighty types who are good players & leaders have vanished.

The thing the bothers me the most is that from the info we get there's been a lack of leadership, work ethic & character going back to the Shannon Scott & Amir Williams class. Rumors dogged that class & then last years freshman class loses four guys to transfer from what I could tell guys not buying in Thads vision.

This far into a coaching tenure something somewhere is off to have that be such a consistent problem over the last couple years. You see it with chemistry & cohesion since Craft's senior year.

High level you could say Thad's decision to take Scott over Burke cost that Sullinger lead team a NC and closed the window sooner than it needed to.

Maybe I'm getting my timeline wrong but it felt like that was a turning point the program never recovered from.

The problem with that reasoning is that Scott was the higher ranked prospect coming out of high school. I do not think that many Big Ten programs were even sniffing at Burke.

I'm not sure even with Burke as a freshman that team could have beaten Kentucky.

Burke is a miss for sure but I'm not too hard on Matta for that one. Scott was a top 100 guy & Burke was unheralded. Scott probably wasn't deserving of being a McDonalds AA but he was good prospect out of high school

The loss to the Shockers in the elite 8 is where I think the end began.

The biggest issue with waiting to pull plug next year, is you may lose Archie Miller, who wants to be next in line, to a program like NC State.

I'd hate to see us lose out on a great young coach in Miller because of one extra year on Thad personally....
I am still a big Matta guy for what he has done for the program. I respect all of your basketball posts because usually you are right on but do you really want to go after a guy that was once Thad's assistant. If we are going to get a new coach, which I do not think we are going to do, I would rather have a guy from a bigger program with an est. track record and one hell of a recruiter.

Why would that guy leave a job to come to Ohio State? Money? A coach who is all that is already being paid well.

As for Thad's assistant, he's doing more at Dayton in recent years than Thad is doing at Ohio State. One is trending up, the other down.
