Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

THAD'S (PROBABLY) NOT BACK. It looks like Wake Forest is the latest victim of Thad Matta's "reasonable and diligent efforts to obtain a comparable employment position."

Thad Matta bullshitting his way through interviews just to keep getting paid by the school that fired will always be funny to me, but it's especially hilarious that every year, at least one of these schools genuinely believes they have a chance to land him.

HOWEVER, his contract does expire at the end of June, so there's at least a slight chance he was legitimately considering the job. Regardless, very soon, we're going to have to start taking these interviews a bit more seriously. Or, more realistically, they'll probably just stop happening.

Wake went in a different direction and made a hire.........

Just sayin': I'm not sure that Thad Matta was ever a serious candidate for another position. I think he was just fulfilling a requirement (of seeking another position) in his Ohio State contract so Ohio State still has to pay him, etc. Anyway his Ohio State contract is up in June (2020) so we'll see if he continues to interview for any other jobs.

SKULL SESSION: STUDENTS SHOULD GET FIRST DIBS AT TICKETS THIS FALL, THAD MATTA IS PROUD HE NEVER PAID FOR PLAYERS AND THE 2002 SEASON OF TRESSEL BALL

NOT A DIME.
Thad Matta is damn proud of what he accomplished at Ohio State, but he's damn prouder of how he did it – squeaky clean.

Some of my pals at The Athletic did a fun little exercise, drafting three teams out of Matta-coached players before having Matta himself evaluate each team. It was cool and good and you should read it all, but one moment at the end stood out, for obvious reasons:

Landis: Well, you can say whatever you want now because you don’t have to worry about it blowing back on you.

Matta: That’s right.

Landis: OK, I’ll let you get back to the beach here in a second, but the thing we have to decide is which team you think is the best.

Matta: You have the best team. You’ve got the two guards. Je’Kel on the bench. Greg, Jared and William is really good. Daequan Cook, as far as talent, holy cow. Shannon as the backup point guard. But I gotta give it to you.

Evan, David, Jon and Aaron … I’ll tell you what — that’s pretty good, too. But the team with Greg and Jared would be second.

These are some un-fucking-believable players on this. And we never paid a fucking dime for any of them.

It's a strange realization learning that I made the same amount of money for my athletic performance as Greg Oden, Mike Conley, D'Angelo Russell and Evan Turner combined, but I sure ain't mad about it.

Needless to say, if Thad Matta ever wants to write a book...

Despite how his tenure limped to a finish, which is tremendously sad, I will always have the utmost respect and admiration for Coach Matta. Hopefully he gets a statue someday. He took a broken down program, that will always be second fiddle to the massively successful football program and made them legitimate contenders on the national scale for the better part of a decade and did it the right way. That's one hell of a feat.

The moment his boys knocked off unbeaten Illinois the Buckeye basketball program was back. No one can ever take the run he had, for about a decade, away from him.

The only thing missing was a national championship but he had tOSU in play for it for years.

Sylvester draining that 3 is, maybe, my favorite memory of tOSU basketball.

Well, this may have escalated quickly.

Still not sold on him coaching again, but this is the level/location/program that fits the mold.

Wichita State to part ways with Gregg Marshall after allegations of physical, verbal abuse against ex-players

Marshall and WSU will split possibly by the end of the week, ending the tenure of the most successful coach in school history

If Matta does become the Shockers basketball coach; it will be interesting to see if he gets a long term deal or a 1 year deal as an "interim coach". I guess it could depend on the current state of Matta's "health issues"; anybody know how Matta's health is these days?
