"That Chinese dude..."

Hugh Douglas and Byron Leftwich of the Jacksonville Jaguars were on ESPN's SportsCenter game show "HearSay" yesterday. The game is similar to classic game show "Password" where one team member must lead the other to a secret word or phrase (all sports related in this case) without uttering four 'forbidden' related terms.

Anyway, Byron was playing to Hugh, and up came 'Ichiro'. First words out of Leftwich's mouth were, "That Chinese dude..." With a little extra prodding, Douglas came up with the answer. One of the 'forbidden' words, of course, was 'Japanese'.

I don't know about you guys, but I was deeply offended by this, and I hope both men are severely reprimanded by the league and forced to issue a formal apology to Ichiro, to Ichiro's family, and to the people of both China and Japan.

Shame on you, Byron. Shame on you.

Better yet, he should just have to issue a hand-written policy to every Chinese citizen. It'd be kinda like having to write sentences in school, only to an exponentially greater degree. They say that repetition is great teacher and I'm reasonably certain that he'd learn from this. Of course, he'd probably be on IR for this season since he probably writes with his throwing hand.

who cares what itchytoe thinks, if he doesn't like it he can take his ass back to the Japan League salaries.

I don't think that either in japan or china that anyone could tell the difference b/w a Brit an American or a German (all in the same uniform) and not talking. So all this PC shit is just that. Fuck 'im if it offends him.

please excuse me while I vomit over all the frickin PC shit that goes on today. People have to quit be so offended over little mispeaks all of the time.

You don't see me getting mad because I'm a white guy who Larry Frickin Bird would be insulted to be guarded by if I was good enough to play in the NBA.....

Ichiro himself has every right to be offended, but I imagine he'll be man enough to keep it to himself. If anyone else makes an issue of it, though, I'm going to shove a screwdriver into my ear.

There's a difference between trying to make a distinction between a Japanese or Chinese person based on sight alone, and not knowing which country the biggest Asian baseball star ever to play in the majors is from. Leftwich is totally ignorant. If a white contestant were to identify a famous marathon runner from Kenya as "That Somalian dude", blacks would be in a furor.

And that's fine, they should be. What they shouldn't do is make it a public issue (not saying Ichiro has), and the media shouldn't say shit. Fine, Leftwich is a dumbass. He's a fucking football player - who knew? Sticks, stones, yadda yadda, words will never blah blah blah.

It's a game and he did what he did to get the correct answer from his teammate... I don't watch baseball and am oblivious to where players come from. I wouldn't have known any better if he was from Japan or China or Korea or etc.

I'd supose the better wording would have been the Asian dude but life moves along. He didn't try to insult the player... why folks get all PC and up in arms over this stuff is beyond me... water off the back, move along...
