The 2020 College Football Season

Any word if the ACC forced ND to join full time for football or if they just rolled over and are hooking them up for the season?

I read that is just for this season.

Notre Dame is set to play a conference schedule for the first time in program history, as the Fighting Irish have joined the ACC for the 2020 season. Notre Dame will play 10 conference games in 2020, which is supposed to be the program’s only season in the league.

Finally the NCAA gets something right:

“Our decisions place emphasis where it belongs — on the health and safety of college athletes,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said Wednesday in a statement. “Student-athletes should never feel pressured into playing their sport if they do not believe it is safe to do so. These policies ensure they can make thoughtful, informed decisions about playing this fall.

“First and foremost, we need to make sure we provide a safe environment for college athletes to compete for an opportunity to play in NCAA championships,” Emmert said. “A decision based on the realities in each division will provide clarity for conferences and campuses as they determine how to safely begin the academic year and the return to sports.”

Big Ten getting in on the act too but unlike the PAC with their crazy 50% revunue split they have perfectly reasonable demands pretty much all covid19 related.

B1G TEN Unity Proposal
Protecting the Well-Being of All Athletes
Oversight & Transparency

  • Third-party, approved by players, to administer COVID testing and enforce all COVID-19 health and safety standards
  • Sufficient penalties for noncompliance
  • Mandate for athletics personnel to report suspected violations

Prevention & Safety Protocols

  • Ensure all college athletes have up-to-date information about the risks that COVID-19 may pose to their personal health, the health of our families, and the health of our communities
  • Adherence to WHO and CDC guidance for sporting events and compliance with all federal, state, and local statutes and regulations
  • Safety standards that are appropriate for each sport
  • Social distancing requirements and mandatory mask-wearing in and around athletic facilities by coaches, staff, players, vendors, press, and visitors
  • Minimum cleaning and sanitation protocols for all uniforms, equipment, and athletic facilities, including visitor locker rooms
  • Temperature checks for anyone entering any athletic facility

Testing, Contact Tracing & Related Procedures

  • Contact-tracing protocols for anyone who comes into contact with college athletes and team personnel who test positive
  • Testing of everyone who comes into contact with college athletes, including coaches, trainers, medical staff, nutrition staff, referees, media, etc.
  • In season testing of all of the stated above three days per week
    • Testing twice per week with an FDA-approved test with less than 1% false negatives
    • Additionally, testing on the day of competition (or within 24 hours of competition for each team that can be quarantined) with an FDA-approved test with less than 5% false negatives, with results delivered at least two hours before competition
  • Immediate quarantine of any person who tests positive or exhibits symptoms
  • Quarantine rules for college athletes who test positive, and protocols for them to return to practice and competition
  • Objective criteria for shutting down seasons should the pandemic take a turn for the worse or if teams experience significant outbreaks

Player Assurances

  • Whistleblower protections for athletics personnel and college athletes reporting a suspected violation
  • Ban the use of COVID-19 liability waivers
  • Automatic medical redshirt for any player who misses any competitions due to a positive test or a mandatory quarantine due to contact tracing
  • Preserve athletic eligibility, scholarship, and roster spot for any player who opts out of athletic participation or is unable to play more than 40% of their scheduled season due to COVID-19 or season postponement/cancellation
  • Complimentary access to the Big Ten network for athletes’ family members

Hazard-Related Economic Support

  • Coverage for all out-of-pocket medical expenses related to COVID-19 (both short-term and long-term) incurred by active college athletes
  • Scholarship protections (including room, board, and stipend) in the event that the season is canceled due to COVID-19
  • An adjustment to the cost-of-living stipend to account for the increase personal expenses related to more limited access that players have to facilities
  • Reimbursement for stipends that were reduced during the summer

Anybody else find it interesting/hilarious/amusing that neither the PAC-12 nor the B!G actually responded to this demand?

Preserve All Existing Sports by Eliminating Excessive Expenditures
  1. Larry Scott, administrators, and coaches to voluntarily and drastically reduce excessive pay.
  2. End performance/academic bonuses.
  3. End lavish facility expenditures and use some endowment funds to preserve all sports.*
*As an example, Stanford University should reinstate all sports discontinued by tapping into their $27.7 billion endowment.

"With recent schedule changes for the regular season, it makes sense for the committee to make its final rankings after the conference championship games, when it can get a complete picture of the season," executive director Bill Hancock said in a release. "The selection committee members understand the need to be flexible as we all navigate uncharted waters this season, and this move will allow them to evaluate all the available information."

The committee will still choose the top four teams following the season with the semifinals taking place New Year's Day in the Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl and the national championship game slated for Jan. 11, in Miami.

Godfrey's one of the best and most honest reporters out there.
I can't believe Wisconsin could be 70mm in the hole this year.

I just assumed it was an excuse to not refund season tickets.

Facing revenue loss, Badgers ask fans to donate football season ticket money

Entire article: https://www.kenoshanews.com/sports/...cle_6a7b9fb2-4da7-5d16-b1aa-96a0a02dfce0.html

Wisconsin's athletic department is projecting revenue losses between $60 million and $70 million if the Badgers play a conference-only, 10-game season and losses of more than $100 million if the upcoming football season is canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Wisconsin officials told the Wisconsin State Journal that the athletic department would have to go into its reserve funds to make up the difference. According to the report, the reserve fund had $190 million at the end of the 2018-19 fiscal year.

I'll bet Wisconsin's fundraising efforts make no mention of their "reserve fund".

Guess what happens when you drop out of a Power 5 conference, go "independent", and the conferences are now just playing games within their conference?

Answer: You can't find enough opponents to fill out your schedule so you have to cancel your season and blame it on the virus.
Bro, I love me some Luke, but the AAC ain’t Power Five

All the B1G schools still get the TV money right? I find it hard to believe they will go bankrupt in one year when all the mid major athletic depts can survive on 1-3 big money football games every year. If there aren't fans in the stands it seem like costs would be limited to travel and room and board for scholarship athletes. My daughter's travel soccer org tried that this spring since the season was cancelled and we got the $65 back rather than donate. I can guarantee if I spent thousands on season tickets I'm getting that money back.
