The Buckeye National Championship Teams (and a few near misses)

When ND, scUM and Alabama fans start using some inflated bullshit numbers I say we have 7 NC's.

When speaking with rational, fair minded and somewhat unbiased CFB fans I say we have 5.

Also to be as fair as I can be I don't put any more stock in Pre WWII acheivments from OSU than I do from anyone else. If you want to impress me with your programs history, I put a significant curve toward post 1950 data. It was more like rugby than football back then and the eligibility rules were completely insane.

Great article LJB and let us hope we add #6/8 to the talley on Monday.

That is a ton of research there, really impressive. The thing that really sticks out is how strong that 1996 team was. I have always felt that the 1998 team was the most talented, but in reading all of your research I might have to reconsider. I guess I just forgot how good that team was even though I watched just about every game that year and remeber the loss to scUM that year but for some reason it doesn't sting nearly as much as the loss to Mich. St. in 1998. Every year we play them and we have something large on the line those players and us fans have to relive that game, ala this year. I forget who said it but one of the guys from that 1998 team said it was the day any player fears, every single thing that could go wrong for tOSU on the field in an entire season happened on one single day. That game could be played 99 more times and I have no doubt we would win every one of them.

Well, I guess you could add the 2006 squad as a near miss (if you consider 27 points "near").

Other games were not exactly near in terms of final score either.

Best way to think of it is we played on the field for the NC in our last game the following years:

1968
1969
1970
1975
1979
2002
2006

we are now 2-5. :sad2:

Jax, tOSU also would have won the Coaches Poll NC after the 1974 season if they had won the Rose Bowl against USC, but that wasn't known until later that night when Alabama lost the Orange Bowl.

True but those I listed were the ones when we knew going into it (time for hype to build, pressure to mount etc).

Either way, 2-5 or 2-6...ugh.

Silver lining is if you average it out we play for a NC every 5 years
