The Deepest Defense in the Nation

bucknut74

You Enjoy Myself
First team: #75 Simon Fraser, #98 Joel Penton, #90 Quinn Pitcock, #57 Mike Kudla, #37 Dustin Fox, #6 Tyler Everett, #47 A.J. Hawk, #42 Bobby Carpenter, #2 E.J. Underwood, #51 Anthony Schlegel, and #21 Nate Salley.

Second team: #95 Sian Cotton, #83 Redgie Arden, #99 Jay Richardson, #17 Marcus Freeman, #97 David Patterson, #1 Thomas Matthews, #13 Harlen Jacobs, #32 Brandon Mitchell, #5 Mike D'Andrea, #26 Ashton Youboty, and #9 Donte Whitner.
------------

If there's a deeper D in the nation, I'd like to see it. I see 4 possible All-Americans and least 7 that will be playing on Sundays...on the SECOND TEAM. And that's being extremely conservative. Wow.

In a few years I guarantee you we will be the undisputed NFL University.

I love your enthusiasm but uh... let's take a closer look.
Cotton = never played
Arden = RS jr proven nothing to this point
richardson = RS SO = proven nothing to this point. (awesome practice reports don't mean jack ..... YET)
freeman = FR never played
patterson = SO proven nothing yet
matthews = SR - if you haven't done it yet.....
jacobs = SR , see above
mitchell = RS SO, again...proven nothing (see a theme here?)
d'andrea = JR, uh... again proven nothing on the field yet
youboty = SO played sparingly and proven nothing
whitner = SO played some but hasn't proven anything yet. (do you see another common thing here...."yet")

This is your second team future NFL players....oh and All - Americans?!?! BASED ON WHAT? That is my point. Talent? sure. Hearts? Guts? maybe for some. Don't you think that all kids at all major football colleges have talent? So they were ranked # 1,2,3.... recruiting wise......so what? So are everyone elses kids.

I love our guys, don't get me wrong. I just think propping up our guys like they are world beaters WHEN THEY HAVEN'T DONE SQUAT.....YET.. is going overboard. Maybe you had your rose colored glasses on...? if so...ok. but reality says the majority of these kids aren't playing on sunday. yep..we had 14 last year.....that was one year... don't think it is common.

BTW - even our first time that you listed has FIVE guys that have done squat! (and believe me when I tell you this - I'm not saying they WILL do squat...I'm saying based on past RESULTS...they HAVEN'T done squat). They have great promise. We hinge our hopes on a successful future on that promise! That is all we can do. But going beyond that is wrong imho. Also, if a player is "solid" and you expected him to be "all-american" aren't you disappointed? We need tons of "solid" players to make a great team.

I'll take results over "promise" anyday. Unfortunately right now, all we have are kids with tons of "promise". Oh and a few guys name holmes, hawk... etc. Now THOSE guys have a proven track record. No on Holmes for AA, yes on HAWK(it is going to be close though).

well how about some middle ground here.. maybe most of them are going on promise but from what we HAVE seen from guys like patterson, whitner, mitchell, yabouty, and d'animal who are all on the SECOND TEAM, i dont think ive ever been more excited to see any OSU defense EVER!! and those are some pretty good defenses they are going against...

Ofcourse they haven't proven anything. But when have talent like that riding the pine, it's a new dawn, it's a new day and i'm feeling good.

Here's our 2002
DE Kenny Peterson-Sr NFL
DT Darrion Scott-Jr NFL
DT Tim Anderson-Jr NFL
DE Will Smith-Jr NFL
WLB Cie Grant-Sr NFL
MLB Matt Wilhelm-Sr NFL
SLB Robert Reynolds-Jr NFL
CB Chris Gamble-Jr NFL
CB Dustin Fox-So Soon2be
SS Mike Doss-Sr NFL
FS Donnie Nickey-Sr NFL

I don't think it's too far fetched to say that there's talent coming in that can make us forget about the above group and surpass them. Youboty, Whitner, Richardson and a few others could easily start on any team in the Big10 right now.

Be careful you are gonna get yelled at with people saying that is not one of the better defs of all time, they are gonna tell you that the teams in the 70s (who had better stats) were better, truth is that is AMAAZING.

Look at it!! 10 in the NFL, consider hawk also saw considerable time in the NC, and it is flat out crazy, fox will play on sundays (coming from me a fox basher)

When did Penton and Everett move to the first team?
Recent O-zone practice reports indicated that those two were practicing with the first-team unit. Penton is a little deceiving, since Marcus Green is dinged up and will likely take that spot back when healthy. Whitner however, is healthy and practicing, but the report indicates that Everett may have taken his spot on the first team defense.
