Game Thread THE GAME: #1 Ohio State 42, #2 Michigan 39 (11/18/06)

Amen. Superficially, UM hadn't had to come to terms with the loss, because the campaigning began immediately after The Game ended. Now that that faint glimmer of hope has been snuffed out, they can feel the pain we experienced in '93, '95, '96, and '03.

Swallow it, bitches.
So what you are saying here is that finally, mercifully tsun gets closure, which we all know is what everyone wants in this feeling kind of world we have today.
Good for the wolverweinies

I wish it were so, if they pound USC in the Rose (which is entirely possible); we are going to hear all kinds of coulda, woulda, shouldas. And if god forbid, we somehow lose to UF; it will be even worse.

Ohio State vs Michigan Rivalry goes global

I did not see a thread on the first few pages where this fit.

So, I am in Barbados for vacation and SOME work. I drove north on the island to a place called the Flower Cave. Inside the bar, which is a small A-frame building, the walls are covered with business cards.

On the way out my wife chuckles and points to the wall near the door at eye level. There is a business card with a picture of the 1994 UM football team which serves as the background for the card. Just above the Michigan 1994 text someone wrote with a black marker: F U C K.

I nearly cried it was so funny. The guide asked me what I was laughing about and I tried to explain it. Inevitably it turned to a cricket (or soccer) rivalry comparison which he finally understood.

Anyway...I thought it was pretty cool.

Someone, anyone pleas explain to me how when we lost to Texas last year we dropped to.........what...9th?
Michigan loses and the don't drop?

Overly simplistic?

This is what caused all the problems.
If scUM drops after losing to us do we still hear all the whining and wailing?

That is of course at a different time in the season, one with inherently more volatility.
Nonetheless, your point has some merit. That loss, albeit on home turf was narrow. The game was decided late, unlike the contest versus TSUN.

There is of course the other side of the argument, which is that Michigan lost by 3, on the road, in an emotionally charged game that is always viewed as a gut-check. One for all the marbles.

Should TSUN drop precipitously? Probably not, and in truth they have not done so.

Should Ohio State have dropped precipitously? Probably not either, and had the Texas game been played on the first weekend of November they likely would not have done so - for poll inertia would have been built in, even figuring an identical result. (Which, with that dateline scenario is highly debatable).

As it turned out, despite a later loss on the road to Penn State that Ohio State team still worked its way up in the rankings. Finishing out the campaign with the big Fiesta Bowl victory vs ND.

They were fairly ranked at the end.

If TSUN takes care of business in the Rose Bowl game they also will be fairly ranked at the end of this season.

There were a bunch of undefeated teams ranked behind the Bucks at that point.

Following the Game, tOSU was the only major undefeated left as Rutgers lost to UC. The lack of a drop in the poll was due to the fact that going into the game, there was a perception that OSU and tsun were on a whole other level than everyone else. A close final score and some stumping by Herbie at the end of the game created an energy for that to happen. Remember, most of the pollsters only get to watch a couple of games a week if that before turning in there ballots. Everyone saw this game.

sandg, makes a great point.
That scUM still has a chance to finish highly.

Not that there fans seem to care.
They, like Carr, would like to blame someone, anyone else.
That, more than anything will be a big reason why Carr will have a tough time beating Tressel.

you know, i'm sorry-- or, rather, maybe i'm not sorry-- but i just CAN'T bring myself to root for those bastards in Blew in the Rose Bowl. i hope that the Trojans blow them out...

The Game played on 11/18 was THE PINNACLE of the greatest rivalry in sports. a 1 vs 2 matchup may happen again in The Game, but never again for the first time... we beat them in the biggest game that will ever be played in this great rivalry, and as far as i'm concerned, no matter how many big matchups we see in the future, nothing after this will quite compare... in turn, i hope TSUN loses every game forever from here on out.
