Game Thread THE GAME, 11/25/17 @ 12:00 ET (FOX)

The story of the 1961 Game is worth learning if you weren't already aware of it. Here is one version: http://www.cleveland.com/osu-michigan/2012/02/osu-michigan_1961_buckeyes_win.html

Bottom line;
  • scUM scored with 34 seconds to play to make it 42-20
  • Woody called only his 5th pass play of the day which went for 60 to the tsun 10 yard line
  • With about 20 seconds remaining, Woody called 3 more passes
  • On 4th and goal he got his TD
  • The article doesn't mention the 2 point conversion but from the math of the score, it had to have happened with little to no time on the clock

According to Jack Park's Encyclopedia, Hayes claimed he went for two because it was the kicking coach Ernie Godfrey's 70th birthday, so Hayes wanted the final score to be 70 points. Everybody involved thought that was the dumbest excuse they'd ever heard.

The score was 21-12 after three quarters; OSU reeled off 29 points in the 4th. With the score 42-12, UM went for two when they scored with :34 left. Not hard to imagine that that was what set Woody off.

Bo Schembechler was Ohio State's offensive coordinator for this game.

Those are amazing. I would buy 10 of them right now if Buckeye Planet can somehow get them and say we are donating to the 83 kids foundation or something

I cant lie, that has me a little choked up this Thanksgiving morning. :sad2:

You could contact the charity and ask about a donation for some stickers. They do have gifts for donations, etc. I'm sure the autographed pictures are in a limited supply now.

FILM STUDY: THE IMPORTANCE OF SLOWING MICHIGAN'S REINVIGORATED RUNNING GAME

"Their tailback's an outstanding player, and their interior offensive line is really, really good," Urban Meyer said of the Michigan running game during this week's Big Ten coaches teleconference.

Despite starting the year 4-0 before a veritable monsoon led to their first loss of the season, few observers (this author included) truly believed this year's Michigan offense had the playmakers necessary to contend for a Big Ten title. After injuries claimed the seasons of starting quarterback Wilton Speight and receiver Tariq Black, who had emerged as the team's top playmaker, Jim Harbaugh's offense began to sputter and the Wolverines failed to top 13 points in any of their three losses thus far.

As Harbaugh's QB carousel continues to spin with John O'Korn likely getting the nod as they welcome Ohio State to Ann Arbor, many expect the maize and blue defense to be the ones tasked with keeping The Game close. But although Urban Meyer and the OSU offensive brain trust are undoubtedly worried about slowing the aggressive approach of UM defensive coordinator Don Brown, Buckeye defensive coordinator Greg Schiano still has plenty of his own to worry about.

While the Wolverines have struggled to connect on many big passing plays this fall (ranking 102nd nationally in completions of 10+ yards), the physical ground game for which Harbaugh originally became famous while at Stanford has reappeared. Specifically, running back Karan Higdon has blossomed in the second half of the season, rushing for 200 yards against both Indiana and Minnesota while adding 158 more against Rutgers.

As shown in the highlight above, Higdon is a patient runner who waits for holes to develop before showing a good burst to separate once in open space. Since he's not the kind of back that can run through arm tackles at the line, offensive coordinator Tim Drevno gives him plenty of protection in the form of a fullback, two tight ends, and often a pulling guard (as seen in the Power-O concept executed above) that punishes opposing defenses.

Of course, they brought that same philosophy to Ohio Stadium last November, and the Buckeye defense routinely stuffed a unit many consider more talented than this year's iteration. Despite tallying 43 carries in last year's contest, the Wolverines managed only 91 rushing yards against a front seven that returns every starter but one: middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan.

A LOOK BACK: URBAN MEYER IS PERFECT AGAINST THE WOLVERINES IN THE FIVE GAMES THE TEAMS HAVE PLAYED IN HIS TENURE

88309_h.jpg

Urban Meyer is 5-for-5 against Michigan at this point in his career. Let's take a look back on those five games.

Thus far, Urban Meyer is 5-0 against the rivals from up north. There have been close calls, there have been blowouts, but the bottom line is that Meyer is 5-0 up to this point.

With that being said, it seems to be the appropriate time to revisit those five games and look at exactly how we got to the unblemished record that Buckeye fans have enjoyed for half a decade.

2012:

With the Buckeyes ineligible for any postseason games due to sanctions, the final game of the regular season was also the final game of the 2012 campaign for the No. 4 ranked local team.

An action packed first half featured five lead changes, and Michigan quarterback Denard "Shoelace" Robinson rushed 67 yards for a touchdown with 40 seconds before the conclusion of the half. Drew Basil nailed a 52-yard field goal at the horn however to cut the Michigan lead to 21-20.

The second half simply featured two field goals by Basil—a 28 yarder and a 26 yarder—and a C.J. Barnett intercepted pass on Michigan's final drive to end any threat and give Ohio State a 26-21 win.

Played before 105,899 fans, the 2012 contest featured the largest crowd ever to witness "The Game" in Columbus up to that point. Meyer opened his career 1-0 against the Wolverines.

2013:

I am awaiting their response at this time. I asked if there were a way that we could get access to them and raise the money for 83Kids from the sales proceeds. Hopefully it will be a positive answer.

Buckeyes need to be disciplined. The wolverweenies will attempt to provoke them in ways that might get them kicked out of the game. Harbaugh will cry about every play that they don't get a penalty call. Expect them to feign targeting.

Let your attitude determine your altitude Buckeyes.

Only real complain I have with Urban (aside from the 2015 Sparty debacle) is that he's only 2-3 against the spread against tsun. He needs to make me whole this Saturday with a big win.

I'm preparing myself for a knuckle buster.

Games up there are almost always closer than they need to be.

This one doesn't have to be close at all but I have a feeling it will be.
