The Game, tOSU at ttun, Nov. 27th,12pm FOX (3654 down to 0)

Some thoughts from the outside. And things that kind of make me chuckle now.
1- I guess we should have taken the amount of experience more seriously (upper classmen...ect)
2- can not believe everyone thought a Red-Shirt Freshman QB would be better and better every single week and not have a bad day or an average day
3- forget all of the stuff about QB,RB,WR it has and always has been about the bigs up front
4- For once Hairball might have finally had a solid coaching moment, spending all year grooming a running game and then getting a cold wintery day to use it in the the game

I agree that this year has been an odd one for college football. But I also see a theme which is to say that tOSU, Bama, Clemson all have suffered massive player losses over the last couple of years and even powerhouses have "rebuilding" years if you can call 10-2 rebuilding for both Bama and tOSU (I am confident Georgia wins next week). Which see Georgia and their upper classmen filled roster (12+ BTW).

I also agree with the idea that once tOSU removed their DC from calling plays they were basically coaching a man down for the season on that side of the ball. How long can you go without a coordinator that is fully in charge and scheming and planning day in and day out before it catches up with you. And lets not forget this is the first year in maybe 10-15 years tOSU did not have some freak DE on the defensive line that created havoc all game. SCum had the right players and game plan and focus needed this year which is the first time in a very long time they did. Next year that team is going to be in a true rebuild on defense.

I still wonder if that game is played in a Dome how it goes. Didn't watch much if any of the game as I was at my own tailgate but I am pretty shocked tOSU scored less than 30 and somehow those WR were kept under control. Cold windy day was not ideal for tOSU which should be a red flag as if the team is built right they can kick ass in any conditions. So lots to unpack. But also lots to be impressed with from the Ryan Day era. That was his first B10 loss. Not too shabby. But this is now 100% his program and his team and we will all see how he does it and handles the pressure. Because the questions are coming. The bar is high in Columbus and this season did not meet the mark. So he will have to spend the off season getting things righted. Winning Ain't Easy

There is one good thing, one silver lining that comes from a loss. Especially a loss to scUM - it forces you to look at yourself in the mirror.

What have we done right and what can we do to improve what is lacking. The sky isn't falling, not even close. And this team along with these coaches are still doing a lot right. Doesn't mean they can't do better, but I believe we have coaches possessed of a certain humility and most importantly, a willingness to adapt and develop something better.

Starts on the defensive side of the ball. Why couldn't we limit ttun to less points than Nebraska? Goes all the way down to the offense, why did we sputter and look so inefficient at times? You have to study your opponent, but you have to study yourself. Introspection and nuance is a hell of a thing.

But the assuring part is that, in the last 20 years, we've seen 2 different coaching staffs respond positively to losses vs scUM and I don't expect that trend to change next year in the Shoe. (Unlike Harbaugh) 2022 starts another clock of a 10 year dominant cycle. But the ground work for that begins day 1 of this off-season.

They plugged gaps against the run.

I'm aware of that buddy, Nebraska has a solid IDL. I was just using that line to infer the sort of questioning every defensive coach on staff will be asking themselves when they go back to the drawing board. That top to bottom approach on getting better. A "feel good" post if you will, despite the fact it's always difficult trying to feel good after losing to *ichigan.

CJ didn't have a bad game though.

I do agree with you about experience. IMO that's why you're seeing a lot of different teams this year. Players at OSU to pro when they can they and at smaller schools (or less successful schools) don't do that.

If we were Cincinnati for example our starters last year basically all come back.

Would this game look different with Werner/Browning/Borland/Hilliard/Cooper/Toga? Shit yeah it would.

Ttun did well to get their best players back and I think they added some grad players too. Those extra years in a D1 program make a big difference.

Even with that though we are fighting up hill with the scheme/coaching calls but at least we have experience.

Places like Alabama/OSU/LSU/Clemson are just going to lose players early though and unfortunately that's not awesome when playing teams that are experienced (with a few super seniors).

I am also curious how the portal is going to affect the better recruiting teams. As players have less patience I can see this working a bit against a team like tOSU that gets so many highly ranked kids. While the ability to sell an open spots helps front end recruiting the kids need some time to get coaching and learn scheme. The issue will be eliminating the experienced and quality depth that tOSU has had for years. I can see that becoming a bigger issue. Like this year having basically 4 tackles on the Oline. Great for PassPro but didn't help cause when it was tile to open a hole between the tackles for a run play.

And I do think that the DC situation mid-season hurt way more than it appeared at the time. It was a tourniquet on a gushing wound. It stopped the bleeding but it did not fix the wound. Once they faced a team with similar talent and motivated the wound started to seep again.

I agree with the comments above which is to say that sometimes a good whooping helps you refocus and evaluate what is happening. The defense needs to be looked at hard and the Oline needs to get better. And you always have to be looking at your DC and OC to make sure you are staying relevant and in front of the curve.

I will say that it appears a 4th college season has emerged. Regular Season, Bowl Season, Recruiting Signings, and now the Portal signings. Like in the Pro's you have the draft (recruiting) and Free Agency (Portal). Again I am not sure where this is going and if it is really going to be a positive for the sport. But it is here now.

There's good and bad... I think a lot of teams that produce star players like Kenneth Walker at Wake Forest will transfer to have a shot at winning (Also Jonah Jackson comes to mind). Where as the big programs will rarely lose impact players because if they were extremely good they'd play at said school.

The portal and this super seniors year made a big mark this year though. Teams like Sparty, Rutgers etc have been able to turn themselves around because of these things.

No excuses because we were the more talented team but experienced players certainly can make an impact on a game. Which is why I think next year's team will be better than this ones provided we don't shit the DC spot.

Lmao. The winner of The Game is "usually" in the B1G championship game. Not wrong, actually. But lends a tad much credit to this year's east division representative.... seems a certain school carried that water since there's been a championship game

motherfuckers need directions to Indy
