The Many Troubles of Marcus Vick (merged)

Beamer is a joke. He's already trying to avoid suspending him for the USC game, even though he has already been sentenced to 30 days in jail. Sure, wait for the "appeal," how convenient.

With 2 drug/alcohol arrests in the offseason, that probably equates to two quarters against Western Michigan (the 2nd game).
Just curious: Does anyone know if the other big conferences have the same interconference transfer rule as the Big Ten? John Kerr is having to pay his own way to play for the Bucks. Would Vick, if he transferred to UM or FSU?
Not sure, but it's not like he'd have trouble paying his own way.

That's largely symbolic -- Vick isn't enrolled in the current session of summer school

That's from the article. Funny stuff. . . It does say, however, that he is missing the first 3 games for his prior problem, and that he probably won't play in the first half the year (ooooooooh).

Vick may be eyeing the I-AA school

Ga. Southern aide: Vick may be eyeing the I-AA school

Marcus Vick.

GREENSBORO — While coach Frank Beamer remains cryptic when talking about Marcus Vick’s future with Virginia Tech, the troubled Hokies quarterback may have started looking for a new home.

According to Georgia Southern assistant athletic director Tom McClellan, Eagles head coach Mike Sewak has had contact with parties close to Vick about a possible transfer.

“Mike said he has had preliminary talks with 'Marcus’ people,’ ” McClellan said. “I don’t know what 'people’ means, but he has not talked with Marcus himself.”

Vick is suspended indefinitely from the Virginia Tech football team after a May conviction for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, followed by a recent arrest for speeding and possession of marijuana.

Talking with reporters at ACC Football Kickoff on Monday, Beamer repeatedly refused to answer questions about Vick.

“The only thing I’ll say about Marcus here is he’s suspended indefinitely and his exact future is undetermined. That’s it,” Beamer said.

Pressed by another reporter, he responded, “His future will be determined in the future.”

Georgia Southern is a traditional I-AA power with six national championships, including back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. The school is in Statesboro, Ga., 209 miles from Atlanta, where Marcus’ brother Michael plays for the NFL Falcons.

If Vick transferred to Georgia Southern, or any I-AA school, he would not have to sit out a year before returning to the field.

There is a Virginia Tech connection at Georgia Southern. Last month, the Eagles hired former Hokies running back Ken Oxendine as wide receivers coach.

Oxendine earned a masters degree at Tech last year and spent two years as an assistant strength and condition coach in Blacksburg. But he said he hasn’t talked to Vick and doesn’t expect him to be heading south.

“I knew Marcus, but everything I’ve heard, he’s staying,” Oxendine said. “I haven’t made contact with him. The one person I had spoken with said that Marcus wanted to stay where he’s at and clear up his name. He wants to be what he was supposed to become.”

Tuesday, Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said he also was unaware of any transfer talks.

“I haven’t heard anything along those lines,” Stinespring said.

Neither Beamer nor Vick could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Georgia Southern opens practice on Aug. 5, and Oxendine noted that the Eagles have senior quarterback Chaz Williams returning. Williams is a preseason first-team All-Southern Conference pick.

“Even if Marcus would come, you’d have a hard time dealing with him when you’ve had a guy that’s been in the system three years,” Oxendine said.

There’s also the matter of Vick’s pending legal troubles. He has yet to appear in court for his latest arrest, and if his appeal of the earlier conviction is unsuccessful, Vick still has 30 days of jail time to serve.

Not exactly the big deal that everyone is making it out to be. Remember, the Hokies starter is still Randall, not Vick. Also, having this year off doesn't necessarily mean that he loses a year of eligibility. He could come back next year, as a sophomore. The Hokies are losing next to nothing by handing out this suspension, and Vick was granted another chance. VaTech. did the right thing here, but they're not exactly losing a hell of alot by making this move either.

I think he does give up a year of eligibility. Vick has already red-shirted once.

Here's a quote from CNNSI:

The suspension "is a stiff penalty," Virginia Tech president Charles Steger said. "Vick won't play this year and loses that year of eligibility. If there is any more trouble, his Virginia Tech career is effectively ended."

Marcus Vick Reinstated...

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick was cleared Monday to rejoin the team after being suspended this season because of a night of drinking with underage girls.

The younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick joined his teammates for a meeting, re-enrolled at the university and started classes. The university and head coach Frank Beamer cleared the 20-year-old to return to all football-related activities after being suspended for the fall semester.

Marcus Vick was arrested in February 2004, along with teammates Mike Imoh and Brenden Hill, after an encounter with 14- and 15-year-old girls at the quarterback's apartment in Blacksburg. Vick avoided jail by pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge.

Vick also pleaded guilty to reckless driving and no contest to marijuana possession after a traffic stop last summer.

"I'm excited to be back -- I missed this place," Vick said in a statement. "I know that I hurt a lot of people who only want to see me succeed. I'd like to try to make that up to them. I'm appreciative to the university and Coach Beamer for giving me this opportunity. Now I'm ready to put the past behind me and concentrate on the future."
The kid has talent, I hope he gets his head together off the field.
