Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

Darryce Moore hasn’t counted the hours of practice that have helped her emerge from a sometimes lost freshman to a key contributor as a junior this season for the Ohio State women’s basketball team.

Watching the clock, she came to understand, might interfere with the process of learning how to improve her game.

Moore played 14 minutes in relief of starting center Ashley Adams on Thursday and contributed eight rebounds, a career-high six assists and four points to an 88-50 victory over Virginia Commonwealth.
She entered the game at the 10:45 mark of the first half and assisted on Martina Ellerbe’s layup 14 seconds later. Over the next seven minutes, Moore had five assists because she was ready to play from the get-go.

“It’s a day-to-day thing,” she said. “It doesn’t just start with the game. It’s like in practice or when you’ve been watching for a while. When you come back in, you’ve got to match or be better than the productivity that was in there before. So you can’t just come in slowly.”

Moore began the season as the starting power forward for the 24th-ranked Buckeyes (9-3) but now is backing up Adams. She knows what coach Jim Foster wants from her.

“My job is to come in and get rebounds, do assists and get buckets,” she said. “I just have to help the team.”

After the game, Foster went out of his way to say that he now considers Adams and Moore as a tandem in the post. He added that he feels the same about starter Sasha Dobranic and Ellerbe at power forward.

The ?B? in Big Ten women?s basketball traditionally stands for a multicolored bruise.

If 24th-ranked Ohio State needed a reminder of what lies ahead in conference play that begins Thursday night at Iowa, the it only needed to look in the mirror yesterday following a rugged 67-50 victory over Howard at Value City Arena.

The undersized Bison (5-6) never gave an inch during Ohio State?s final nonconference game of the regular season. Their tenacity forced OSU coach Jim Foster to play four starters from 29 to 38 minutes. Even so, he liked the Big Ten feel of the game.

?Yeah, it was kind of fun,? Foster said. ?It?s real. You don?t play opponents that are (all) going to play the same way. You?ve got to adjust. We were really taking it to the basket hard and we were getting fouled.
?A lot of times in games like that is your concentration what it needs to be when you go to the foul line? We shot 77 percent from the foul line. So the concentration was certainly there.?

Senior co-captain Tayler Hill was 8 for 8 from the line in the second half on her way to 22 points. Freshman point guard Ameryst Alston, who had a career-high nine assists, hit all four of her free throws following the break.

The annual march through the preconference women?s basketball schedule to the opening of the Big Ten season hasn?t exactly flown by for Ohio State junior center Ashley Adams.

?Definitely,? Adams said when asked if the trek between November and January seemed longer than usual. ?It?s finally over, and we?re going to play the people we?re being prepared to play. I?m ready.?

Ohio State (10-3) starts conference play against Iowa (11-3) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes, with senior stars Jaime Printy and Morgan Johnson, are fierce and familiar opponents.

The schedule did the Buckeyes no favors. They will hit the road for three of the first four conference games. The road was not kind last season and has been the scene of their losses to Notre Dame, North Carolina and Washington State.

?It?s been talked about every day in practice,? senior guard Tayler Hill said. ?I think this is just going to see how tough we really are as a team. It?s a big thing that we?re playing one of the top teams in the conference at their place in the first game.?

One thing hasn?t changed since the Big Ten players and coaches met the media in Chicago in late October: Defending regular-season champion and preseason favorite Penn State (10-3) is ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press poll, which places the Lions first nationally among conference teams.

Purdue (11-2) checks in at No. 14 and Nebraska (10-3) is No. 25. Ohio State ? which is ranked only in the coaches? poll, at No. 24 ? Michigan (11-2), Michigan State (12-1) and Iowa are receiving votes in the AP poll.

Ameryst Alston has embraced every new thing that Ohio State women?s basketball coach Jim Foster has asked of her this season with a nod and the look of a tennis player awaiting a 140-mph serve.

Seven games ago, Foster told the freshman and two-time Ohio high-school player of the year at Canton McKinley that she was his new starting point guard.

Alston didn?t blink.

?In high school, I was more of a wing player,? she said. ?But with my high-school team, if the game was on the line, the ball was in my hands anyway. So I kind of compare it to that. It?s not a huge difference, but it is different, especially at the college level.?

Two games ago, Foster put another heaping helping on Alston?s plate by handing her the job of guarding the opposing point guard so that he could free up Amber Stokes to harass long-range shooters. Alston again didn?t blink at the thought of taking an assignment from the reigning Big Ten defensive player of the year.

?I like playing defense,? she said. ?I really like playing on the ball. It?s something I think I can handle.?

When the 24th-ranked Buckeyes (10-3) open the Big Ten season at Iowa (11-3) tonight, Alston will bump heads on both sides of the ball with point guard Samantha Logic. She leads the conference with 98 assists.

?Coach Foster says it should be a good matchup,? Alston said. ?So we?ll see.?

Foster knows that he has thrown Alston into the deep end of the pool. Logic, who is averaging 6.9 assists, is a pure point guard with all-around skills. She also had the chance to play last season with senior point guard Kamille Wahlin as a tutor.

After watching this game on the BTN, I now remember why I just follow the women's program at don't watch many of their games. Hill and Stokes are about the only athletes on the roster. Some of those ladies really look like they need to get in better shape IMO
IOWA CITY, Iowa ? The anvil hanging over the Ohio State women?s basketball team for 40 minutes finally fell on their noggins in overtime last night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Buckeyes, stunningly passive on both sides of the ball for much of the evening, allowed the Iowa Hawkeyes to go to the basket repeatedly in the extra period.

The resulting three layups and six free throws allowed Iowa to pull out a 77-71 victory in the teams? Big Ten opener.

That the game went to overtime was something of a surprise. Ohio State trailed 59-50 with 5:15 left in regulation after Jaime Printy scored on a backdoor cut and layup for Iowa.

Even Tayler Hill dropping in a season-high 34 points for the Buckeyes (10-4) didn?t seem enough to save them. Then a 9-0 run happened that ultimately allowed Ohio State to seize a 63-61 lead on a Hill jumper with 24.8 seconds remaining.

Not looking good for the women's program and I was sorry to see that Amber Stokes suffered a knee injury.
The Ohio State women?s basketball team?s season took a step toward the proverbial brink yesterday afternoon during and after a 79-73 loss to Big Ten rival Illinois at Value City Arena.

Beyond having their home winning streak snapped at 31, the Buckeyes (10-5, 0-2) suffered a major personnel loss.

Senior co-captain Amber Stokes was carried crying from the court with 3.5 seconds remaining in the first half after suffering what initially is being called a sprained left knee.

?I wouldn?t think we?re seeing her for a little bit,? OSU coach Jim Foster said. ?But we?ll know more (today).?

Playing without Stokes in the second half, the Buckeyes could never separate from the Illini (8-6, 1-1) or catch them after losing the lead late in the game.

?She was the defensive player of the year in the league,? Foster said. ?Then you?re playing against the quickest and most athletic team, of course, it?s going to have some impact. And it did. But it?s somebody else?s opportunity.?

Opportunities could abound as soon as Thursday, when the Buckeyes travel to Minnesota looking for a crucial Big Ten victory. A somber Tayler Hill, OSU?s other co-captain, was brutally frank following the loss.

?We?re not showing determination,? said Hill, who had 30 points yesterday. ?We?re not showing heart as a team. They wanted it more than us. It shouldn?t be like that.?

This season not looking very good at all:(
Bad news continued to settle on the Ohio State women?s basketball team like ashes from a five-alarm forest fire tonight in Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers burned down the slumping Buckeyes 83-74 and in the process presented Ohio State with its third Big Ten loss in three conference games this season. And this one really wasn?t as close as the final score.

Minnesota (13-4, 2-1) stripped Ohio State (10-6) to the bone in the first half while building a 50-31 lead. The Buckeyes did manage to slice a late 18-point deficit to 80-72 with 1:12 to play, but the surge was not enough to make up for the first half.

The fast start allowed the Gophers to withstand whatever Ohio State could muster in the second half. Minnesota offset the 52.4 percent shooting by the Buckeyes in the first 20 minutes by scoring 24 points off a dozen turnovers and building a 13-0 edge in second-chance points.

Ohio State?s step-slow defense also sent the Gophers to the free-throw line for 18 attempts in the first 20 minutes. They made 17 of those and 28 of 33 for the game.

After the game, OSU coach Jim Foster announced a lineup change: Junior Darryce Moore will replace fellow junior Ashley Adams at center in Monday night?s game at Purdue.

?We made a change defensively in this game, and we became a much better defensive team in the second half,? Foster said. ?We put Darryce at center and we sat Ashley. I thought Darryce played a very aggressive, intense second half.?

The title of this article is "Defense just one of the problems". I think the other problem is Coach Foster. I believe that time has passed him by and before this program goes any further down the hill he needs to either retire or be replaced IMO
If the Big Ten stat sheet looks upside down to Ohio State women?s basketball coach Jim Foster, a good reason exists.

Three games and three losses into the conference season, the Buckeyes (10-6) are scoring 72.7 points per game. This part of the ledger doesn?t seem so wrong to Foster. The defense, however, is allowing 79.7 points per game.

?We?re second in the league in scoring and 12th in defense,? Foster said.

This is a whole new and uncomfortable world for the coach who won six Big Ten regular-season championships in his previous 10 seasons at OSU.

?Yep,? Foster said when asked if being last defensively is a first-time experience over his 35-year career. He quickly added that ?it?s nice to have a fixable problem.?

Yet a question begs: Are there enough buckets aboard to bail out the water already inside this listing ship with a game at 12th-ranked Purdue (13-2, 2-0) next up at 7:30 tonight in Mackey Arena?

Really good effort by the women's team without their leading scorer. Triple OT loss:(
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? The rain that had followed the Ohio State women?s basketball team through the beginning of the Big Ten season reached torrential proportions last night before the Buckeyes had even taken the court at Mackey Arena.

Ohio State, winless in its first three Big Ten games, entered Purdue?s den without leading scorer and co-captain Tayler Hill, who stayed behind in the team hotel because of flulike symptoms.

Sophomore guard Maleeka Kynard was left in Columbus on Sunday because of the same bug. Bad things seemed likely against the 12th-ranked Boilermakers. What unfolded, however, was something different. The underdog Buckeyes took the Boilermakers to three overtimes before losing 82-75. The loss, though draining, didn?t erase the effort from the remaining players.

Freshman point guard Ameryst Alston played all 55 minutes and gave the Buckeyes (10-7, 0-4) a career-high 24 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Fellow freshman Cait Craft, who started in place of Hill, was on the court for 51 minutes. She had played a total of 73 minutes in her previous eight games. She had five points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

?We fought hard in that game,? Alston said. ?Fifty-five minutes is tough, but we worked and we worked. We played until the end. We didn?t even have our best player out there on the floor. So that says a lot about our team. From this game, we?re going to take it to the next with the same energy.?

Coach Jim Foster knew Hill wouldn?t play at some point during the afternoon.

?That means that Cait is and we?ve got to adjust a few things, and we did that,? Foster said.

Ohio State guard Ameryst Alston is the Big Ten's freshman of the week in women's basketball, the conference announced today.

Alston, from Canton McKinley, averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in road games against Minnesota and Purdue. She had 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting against the Golden Gophers and played all 55 minutes -- scoring 24 points -- in a triple-overtime loss to the Boilermakers.

One victory couldn?t clear away all the clouds hanging over the Ohio State women?s basketball team since Big Ten play began two weeks ago.

But a 68-45 dusting of Indiana last night at Value City Arena, which also featured the return of Tayler Hill from an illness, provided a welcome port in the storm for the Buckeyes. The team rebounded well. It didn?t foul so much, and the offense came alive in the second half to turn a six-point game into a laugher. Having an easy victory, especially after dropping a three-overtime thriller at Purdue on Monday, obviously felt good.

The road back in the Big Ten, however, remains long and winding.
?You can?t lose sight of the fact that it?s about today,? coach Jim Foster said. ?There?s no such thing as a night where you win four games. You win one. We?ve lost enough.?

Getting the Big Ten?s leading scorer back was a good start. Hill missed the Purdue game and played sick in an 83-74 loss at Minnesota last week. She gave the Buckeyes (11-7, 1-4) 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal over 32 minutes against the Hoosiers (10-7, 1-3).

?I?m starting to feel better,? Hill said, adding that she still isn?t well. ?I?m close, though.?

She also defended Aulani Sinclair, the conference?s fourth-leading scorer, and held her to five points and 2-of-15 shooting. Foster could tell that Hill was hurting by her shooting from three-point range (1 of 6).
