Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

Strange situation

I hope Gene hasn't messed this one up
Louisville is playing in the Women's national championship game and big Gene thinks he is going to get their HC. I would think that he is going to have to pay out some big-time money because Louisville loves their basketball both men's and women's. I do not know why he just did not take the HC from Texas. We will probably end up with Agler:(

He's got a deal through 2019 that's already worth $775K/per, born and raised and went to college in Kentucky... I can see why he'd be the top choice, but this one seemed like a pipe dream for Gene-O. Hopefully they didn't completely burn the bridge with Goestenkors, she still seems like an excellent candidate.
Well, according to tweets that have already been posted she has withdrawn her name from consideration because old Gene-o went after Walsh. I guess she did not want to be second fiddle. I do not know if our illustrious AD can get her to reconsider or not. All I know is that I do not want Agler.

Just on a side note, I don't really have high hopes for most hirings while the athletic department is under Gene Smith (even though he's not in charge of all the hirings).

Urban was perhaps hired despite Gene.

But looking back, maybe Tom Ryan was his best hire (since Gene took over)?

So I'm kinda on the fence (even though a move from Foster was probably needed).

Then we have this… No contact:confused:
Ohio State, at least officially, has yet to ask Louisville for permission to speak to women's basketball coach Jeff Walz about its job opening.

"We don't have any knowledge of Ohio State contacting Coach Walz," said Kimberli Pemberton, the assistant SID for women's basketball for the Cardinals, in answer to a query.

Walz said in a story published in the Louisville Courier-Journal that he had "no idea if anyone is going to call."

"I have great situation here," he said. "We've been to two Final Fours and played in two national championships. Our goal is to win a national championship. We're going to strive for that."

Walz is signed through the 2018-19 season.

Ohio State is still open, are they having difficulties finding a "big name" to take their suitcase of money?

Mechelle Voepel (3:06 PM)
Sure seems like it, and I have to admit I'm kind of surprised. Goestenkors is ready to come back ... but only in the right situation. She's not in need of $ ... she wants something that feels right to her, which is a program where it doesn't have quite the feel of a "corporation" like Texas and Ohio State do. Dawn Staley feels like she's headed in the right direction at South Carolina and likes it there. Jeff Walz is a Kentucky guy, and he loves it at Louisville. Geno is locked up. So ... what "big names" are out there who haven't already said no or aren't interested or wouldn't be interesting to Ohio State? I think the OSU administration maybe has been caught by surprise, too, that they have heard some of the "no's" that they have.

...and another tweet from @wbballhoopscoop

Mike Flynn ‏@MikeFlynn826 11 Apr Madness of #OSU hire process can't get any murkier Prob no Walz Mass of bad names back-forth. Next BT name #Toledo HC Tricia Cullop #FanBase

Old Gene should have taken Gail when she was ready to come and not messed around with the guy from Louisville:shake:

But that wouldn't be Gene, would it?

Don't worry, he'll keep you updated via YouTube.

On a another note, I don't know what Gene has done to constitute a contract extension, whenever his current one is up (it was renewed prior to the NCAA sanctions for football).

Search for the Next OSU Women's Basketball Coach: A Progress Report
It has been a month since Ohio State announced that Jim Foster would not be returning as coach of the women?s basketball team and the OSU athletic department has been busy searching for a new coach.

When the announcement of Foster's firing was made, OSU said that they expected to be in the Final Four every few years, clearly setting a high bar for the program in the upcoming seasons. Considering the fact that Ohio State has only ever made one Final Four, this would seem a bit unrealistic but with the resources of OSU and the talent produced in Ohio and elsewhere in the Midwest, it is a very achievable goal.

However, to meet this goal OSU will need to find a coach that can properly take advantage of these resources and lead the program to the next level.

While women's basketball coaching searches aren't followed as closely as those for football and men's basketball, some bits of information has slipped out over recent weeks. The first bit of news was that current South Carolina coach Dawn Staley had withdrawn her name from consideration for the OSU job. Staley has South Carolina on the rise and over her tenure the Gamecocks have gone from being a non-factor in the SEC to finishing ranked in the top 20 this season. Despite this improvement, South Carolina hasn't had success in the NCAA tournament and that is obviously an important criterion for Ohio State. The most upsetting part of Staley's announcement is the potential implication that OSU isn?t being perceived as the top tier job that it should be.

This week reports surfaced that former Duke and Texas coach Gail Goestenkors was in negotiations with Ohio State but that those talks broke down when Goestenkors discovered that she wasn't OSU's leading choice. Goestenkors has one of the best coaching resumes in the country after having coached at Duke from 1992-2007 and then Texas from 2007-2012.

Gene please call Andy and ask him what to do because you have really screwed this up.

It's amazing how badly Gene has bungled this. You'd think with the facilities, a decent women's bball tradition, and the in-state talent (esp upcoming talent) that Gene could find a great coach.

What a buffoon this guy is. Thankfully the big donors were able to bring Meyer to Ohio State b/c we know Gene would have fucked that up too if it was just up to him. This search is just another disaster by Smith to go along w/ the new Athletic O and the press conference regarding Tressel.
