The Polls (AP, Coaches, & CFP, etc.)

no pollsters "own" the playoffs now that a committee wholly determines the berths.

I no longer give the benefit of the doubt to their independence or objectivity.

They leave the B1G champ out two years running and then go dual SEC on us last year then fuck the committee.

The national championship is as mythical as ever.

The pollsters were your attempted comparison to this:
you know what is new? ESPN and their little playoff predictor score that I keep seeing scroll underneath.

They are getting out in front of the narrative of what the polls should look like the next week by completely making up a fucking number about playoff chance. As we have seen, people will generally just go with what they read in the headline so if the ESPN science machine says 3 SEC schools and ND have the best playoff % chance...well it must be true.
which is a very different ball of wax, and a very conflicted one.

Yes pollsters have always been premature and inconsistent, but they didn't have money staked in the poll results (and certainly not billions)

and how long before they start giving their unbiased "predictor" score when a team (like oh say Ohio State) loses and they determine the playoff chances to be 0%?

No way in hell anyone will ever convince me that you keep those committee members free from the influence of ESPN's subliminal marketing campaigns over the course of a full season.

This new thing just raises it to a new level.

They're already talking about which conference (*cough*, SEC) has the best chance to get two teams in, like it should be the new norm to have a conference get two teams in.

yep

I saw the new playoff predictor scroll across while I was at lunch.

Somehow after a 45 point win over a P5 team, OSU's chances dropped and they are no longer in the top 4

EDIT:

My guess is they start the rematch story line soon to set up the loser of Bama/UGA still getting in.

i don't begrudge the committee for last year, though. osu had more losses than bama, and bama didn't lose by 31 to a team that had 5 losses heading into the playoff berth decision. furthermore, it was the committee who bumped us up to #4 for 2014 when the ap had us at #5.

yes, the committee put msu in the 2016 playoff over psu. are you saying that psu deserved a spot over bama, clemson, or oklahoma? i don't at all see the 2016 playoff as one where the big ten was slighted.

I'm saying that 2 of the 4 years OSU has been fucked, the committee is even more arbitrary and opaque than the BCS computer system, that I think ESPN has undo influence over the entire thing and it sure as hell looks like they intend to pick up where they left off last year and make this all about the SEC.

I agree 100%, especially your first point...we had no business getting in over Alabama when we had more losses and got ape-fucked by a mediocre Iowa team. I think Jax is saying (and to an extent, I am saying) is that ESPN is opening trying to influence how the polls should look, and subsequently how the committee should rack-and-stack teams.
