It's great to be able to blast your punts when you have to, but being able to kick high in the right direction is much more important.

The Redskins had Reggie Roby doing their punting for a season or two and the knock on him was that he often 'out-kicked the coverage'. The ball went a long way, on a rope, and the returners were through the coverage before it got set up.

If Turano's confident, which based on the quotes he seems to be, he should be all right. I think kicking is a lot like golf -- 20% physical and 80% mental.

I love the fact that the kid is confident. I think that our punters over the last few years have been a product of the system (ala the pitching system for the Atlanta Braves..go braves! ), and with enough work we can take a punter with average talent and make them good.

I'm sure that he'll have his problems, I look for a punt to be blocked early on this season, but as long as he improves, we'll be in good shape.

Man, some of you Cheerio-pissers need to go back and read the posts that were made about some guy they called "BJ Shanker" last August! :tongue2:

Heck, go back to August two years ago and read what people thought about Groom. Tressel is building up an exceptional track record with coaching punters, so put some scarlet colored glasses on me and call me pollyanna -- we're going to have outstanding punting again this year! :nerd:

In fact, heading into 2002, a lot of us were worried about Nuge. At least I was!

Me too.

Well... they had some tape of turano punting on the News last night... maybe 6 or 7 punts... mostly just judging by ball flight...it wasn't a breakdown segment... 2 looked like monsters, 2 looked pretty darn good... and 2 looked like ducks... one of those a couldn't tell where he was kicking it, so He might have been only trying to kickit 25 or 30 yards... the other duck was from his endzone... and he still probably got 35 on it (to a fair catch).... there was a 7th I think.. but I think it was one of the other ones shown again.

Anyway... he can hit it... so if he's consistent we should be okay... at least as far as max range.

Did y'all read the post where he said that when he had a bad punt, he still hit 40 yds. I can accept that, I just hope he has the control that the 2 prior punters had putting it down where the defense can be really affective.
