When people refer to Linebacker U or such they are usually referring to NFL success, so using All-American status to compare 2 schools is not exactly accurate.

Is that why people, broadcasters, and talking heads talk about current players on PSU contributing to the mystique of Linebacker U before they are even drafted into the NFL?

I personally think collegiate level success is the best way to compare the two schools, but maybe I will find a way to compare NFL level success as well. I'm thinking Pro Bowls would be the easiest measurement.

There are a few ways you could go about it.

  • All-time draft choices(by round and overall)
  • Seasons played(or games started)
  • Pro Bowls
  • Hall of Fame selections

Nice work. Any particular reason you only went back to 1970?

It was a combination of things, but mostly because they stopped keeping accurate track of positions around that time, especially in the later rounds, and I got tired of going through everything.

I forget what pushed me over the edge specifically but basically it just got too sloppy to continue going through accurately around 1970.

Additionally I figured 1970 would be a good cutoff anyways since it seemed like a relatively accurate time when the "modern NFL" began.

I used the official NFL site to go through the draft, and I went through every draft player by player so I didn't miss anyone after I found that the search function was a pain.

The initial term was coined in the early '70s due to PSU's run of All-American LBs. NFL success had squat to do with it.

No I was simply pointing it out because I found it interesting how many more two time winners we had in that span, about 47% of OSU's are repeat AA vs 33%of PSU are repeat earners

You didn't mention that...all you pointed out was that PSU had one more individual who had won AA at LB. It may not have been your intention, but it looked like you were supporting PSU with your statement.

Just to add to my analysis a little bit (since the Dorian Bell commitment has sparked the OSU vs. PSU debate it seems) I decided to look at All-American linebackers both teams have had and came up with this:

All-American LB's
2007: James Laurinaitis, Dan Connor
2006: James Laurinaitis, Paul Posluszny
2005: A.J. Hawk, Paul Posluszny
2004: A.J. Hawk
2002: Matt Wilhelm
1999: Na'il Diggs, Brandon Short, LaVar Arrington
1998: LaVar Arrington
1997: Andy Katzenmoyer
1992: Steve Tovar
1991: Steve Tovar
1989: Andre Collins
1987: Chris Spielman
1986: Chris Spielman, Shane Conlan
1985: Thomas Johnson, Shane Conlan
1982: Marcus Marek
1978: Tom Cousineau
1977: Tom Cousineau
1976: Kurt Allerman
1975: Greg Buttle
1973: Randy Gradishar, Ed O'Neil
1972: Randy Gradishar, John Skorupan
1971: Charlie Zapiec
1970: Jack Ham
1969: Dennis Onkotz
1968: Dennis Onkotz
1965: Ike Kelley
1964: Ike Kelley

OSU: 19 All-American Linebackers

PSU: 17 All-American Linebackers

Interesting that in 1999 Ohio State and Penn State fielded the entire All-American linebacker corps.

Also interesting that Ohio State has had more All-American linebackers than "Linebacker U".
impressive for both schools. from the looks of it this arguement is pretty awesome for both schools. something that can be stated without taking away from either school.
