ESPN Insider

Don't know if anyone else saw this on ESPN's Briefing Room update about Dorian Bell, but I think this quote from recruiting analyst Billy Tucker (who?) pertains here:

"Big steal out of Pennsylvania and the hands of the Nittany Lions, the once perceived linebacker U."

On that note, does anyone know if the NCAA keeps track of who they officially recognize as All-Americans, I could not find anything on the NCAA site.

YES. Download the "2007 Divison I Football Records Book" from this page:

NCAA - Football Records

It will be a large PDF file (3.7 mb - 626 pages). All American Awards are listed (begining pg 214), but only those considered "consensus" by the NCAA. You can read more about their criteria in the PDF.

No. DE all the way. And a very good one at that!

I was a student at Ohio State when Eric Kumerow was there. He was an Outside Linebacker at Ohio State.

EDIT: Here is a LINK to Ohio State's list of all-time 1st team All-Big-Ten players. Look at 1986 and 1987.

EDIT II: The fact that EK was tabbed as a DE for the pros is the reason he was not listed as a 1st round pick in post #1 of the thread. He was chosen 16th overall by the Dolphins back in 1988.

If I remember correctly Ohio State ran a good bit of 3-4 during that time as well.

Which leaves us with Matt Finkes who was a DE in Columbus and in the pros (unless he spent some time at LB while in Scotland that I don't recall) but who's on the list as a 6th round pick.

Saw this quote on the PSU board today from a poster that goes by the name of roncampb (who that I think, consequentially, is generally one of the more level-headed guys over on their board):

Re: 2009 PA top 40 (2 votes)
Again a joke. Congrats rivals!
1) Dorian Bell-Ok, that's cool. I don't have any arguments with that. He is definately an elite player. I personally think lb's receive inflated rankings because IMO, they are not nearly as significant on the football field as the DL and DB's, but that's just my opinion.
Scout.com: 2009 PA top 40

Is anyone else reveling in the irony of a PSU fan stating that linebackers are not all that significant?

That is ironic. (Self-proclaimed) Linebacker U saying that LBs are the least important players on the defensive side of the field.

Maybe they're starting to realize that they're not LB U anymore.

I attempted to update the first post in the thread but I ended up messing up the format, so here is a PDF of the updated information, it should be easier to keep up to date this way.

Also, I looked more closely into the drafts and discovered that I missed quite a few players drafted on both teams, but this list should be more accurate.

The updated totals are 41 OSU linebackers drafted to 52 Penn State linebackers (since 1970) and 20 All American Linebackers at OSU between 12 players (Laurinaitis being the addition since the last post) to 17 All American Linebackers at PSU between 13 players.

Oh yeah, and Laurinaitis ended up with 375 career tackles, good enough for eighth all time between the two schools, just barely edging out Posluszny at 372 and behind only Dan Connor of PSU who ended up with 419 career stops.

I don't see anyone by that name on the schools list of all-americans.

Hmmmmm. Ingram was drafted 20th in the NFL in the 61 draft, played in the 61 All Star Game and ended up signing with an AFL team, The Patriots I believe. The fact that most teams played the Oklahoma, seven, two, two, defense and that they were just coming back to two platoon ball may be the reason.

I'm glad this thread was bumped. Here's an excerpt from Lindy's College Football 2010 Preview, an article* about who really is PositionU at every position:
And the linebacker football factor goes to...

Ohio State.

Not much to separate Ohio State's class from USC's and Miami's. The Buckeyes have a very high end, placing A.J. Hawk at No. 5 in the 2006 draft and Vernon Gohlston at No. 6 in 2008, which means in the past 10 drafts they have had two of the three highest picks, along with Wake Forest's Aaron Curry.

The Buckeyes have had a dozen linebackers selected, and they have had at least one chosen in eight of the past 10 years.

Ohio State's Top 5
1. A.J. Hawk (1st, No. 5, 2006)
2. Vernon Gohlston (1st, No. 6, 2008)
3. Bobby Carpenter (1st, No. 18, 2006)
4. James Laurinaitis (2nd, No. 35, 2009)
5. Anthony Schlegel (3rd, No. 76, 2006)

Runner Up: Miami
Here's their rundown per position, with the winner first and runner up second.

QB: USC, Georgia
RB: USC, Auburn/LSU
WR: Ohio State, LSU
OL: USC, Iowa
DL: Georgia, Texas
LB: Ohio State, Miami
DB: Miami, Ohio State

* - data is strictly who got drafted where for the last 10 years

Although I agree that tOSU is Linebacker U, using Vernon Gholston's draft as an LB to prove it is kinda misleading.
