The Red Sox Are Coming!!!! The Red Sox Are Coming!!!

Nutty: "It may be inevitable but I don't have to like it. I'm sure a new Wrigley Field will follow. Don't have to like that either and I've never been to Chicago."

No doubt about it. I don't like it either. A big part of my youth will be gone when the Ol' Ballpark in the Bronx is demolished.

But the bottom line is this: they're old buildings. Sooner or later, public safety will come into question. An old 2 thousand pound girder fell from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium in 1998 - thank God no one was in the Stadium when it happened.

And also, social issues come into place: a new Yankee Stadium will help revive what is a bad neighborhood in the South Bronx. I love the three jewel Stadiums in baseball, but I can also see why they need new venues (taking the much higher revenue completely out of the equation).

Next week will go a long way into determining whether or not the Sox make the Playoffs. If they get pounded by one or both, the chances of making the Wild Card are slim.
As much as I'd like to think we can still contend for the AL East crown, I remember that we're the Red Sox. However, we do have 6 games left against the Yanks before it's all said and done.

The team that could distance themselves from the rest of pack while the other wild card contenders battle it out against each other is the Oakland A's. They are currently only 1 game up on the A's and 2.5 up on Texas. They have Tampa Bay, the White Sox, and the Blue Jays on the upcoming schedule. Perfect postion to be in.

I'm well aware of all the reasons professional teams want and "need" new stadiums, I just don't like it. As nice a stadium as Heinz Field is the atmosphere there compared to Three Rivers Stadium isn't even close. I doubt the Eagles new stadium has the feel the Vet did. No more Solider field. Can you imagine the Packers not playing in Lambeau? A new Yankee Stadium won't be the same. A new Fenway Park won't have the same feel, even if they try to build a new monster out in left. Oh well, maybe I just don't like change.

Getting back on topic, sorry Sears, I don't think the Yankees want any part of the Red Sox, or more specifically Pedro and Schilling, in the playoffs.

I don't think Boston can catch the Yanks. The Yankees team is picture perfect for the regular season (a la the late 90's Indians teams). They absolutely bludgeon the Blue Jays, Orioles, D-Rays, and teams like that.

The Red Sox might be better set-up to win in the playoffs. They just gotta get there first.

Oakland always has huge second halves. Plus, Zito has been hot lately and been back in form. Watch out. I think Oakland's staff is the best I've ever seen. If they had any kindof everyday line-up, they'd be scary.

I don't think so. Remember, the Yankees (and maybe the Orioles this year) are the only teams that aren't afraid of Martinez.

The Yanks' problem is that their starters have been awful (and I mean AWFUL). Vazquez has pitched like a deer-in-the-headlights National League pitcher in his first year in the A.L. Brown & Mussina have been hurt, but they haven't been any good when they actually do pitch (a lot of Brown's stats have been padded against Tampa Bay). El Duque is the man, but he's about 90 years old, and for Jon Lieber's problem, see above: Vazquez's problem.

Not to mention that Giambi's loss hurts a line-up that HAS to score 5 to 6 runs a night to win, they don't have a lefty in the entire staff (a big problem in Yankee Stadium), and none of the hitters (except for Sheffield) is having an average or above-average year for them.

Sears: "What's the latest on Giambi Sloop?"

The Giambino is working out in Tampa. He's had to start everything from scratch, and looks to return with about 2 weeks left in the season.

There's major speculation about him making the post-season roster, because he'll still be in Spring Training mode in October.

I think the Yankees are prepared to move forward without him for the rest of the season and post-season.

Am I supposed to be surprised that you don't agree?

I think Theo hired a good one in Terry Francona.

We need to find a new 3rd base coach. Dale Sveum has gotten 13 guys thrown out at the plate this year with 9 of them coming since the All-Star break. David Ortiz was the latest to get gunned down (by a good 20 feet to boot) and immediately after was examined by the trainer.

Nah, my man. Although I don't think its fair to say that the Yankees are "afraid" of Martinez and Schilling. They might lose, but I don't think they're intimidated.

Where did I say the Yankees were or should be afraid? I recall Johnson and Schilling giving the Yankees all sorts of trouble in the World Series a few years ago. I would not want to have to face the 1-2 punch of Schilling and Pedro in the playoffs. That said I'm pretty sure the Yankees won't be scared if they have to play Boston in the ALCS. :wink2:
