The Walking Dead (Official Thread)

I didn’t hate all of this episode, but…my thoughts…
The good: They actually followed through on Ezekiel’s story line, and didn’t turn him into an instant William Wallace. Even bigger bonus, the interaction between him and Carol before they left, with Carol being (at least somewhat) convinced because of her own transformation from abused housewife. Consistency, logic, and character arc…WTF? Did they hire special guest writers for this scene? The prep scenes in general were all good, and then going back to the characters (the flower in the arm) was well done. The Shiva death was meh, but we all knew it was coming and at least it made some sense to send Eze-E over the edge and break him, though the timing was complete bull[Mark May]. The end showing that along with the stunned loved ones was also decent. Carol is still 100% badass, though apparently forgot that shooting tires is allowed. Also, special bonus, they peppered the field with a high cal gun at the end of the last episode, and here at the beginning, we saw that almost everyone actually died, which is at least as consistent with reality as this show will allow itself to be. BUT, that leads me to…

The bad: 1) The chase scene. I mean, really? Really? They fire the same gun at the jeep, and it peppers the [Mark May] out of it, yet somehow Rick doesn’t get hit at all in the fury of high cal bullets and the jeep just keeps on trucking at full speed after the engine gets hit multiple times  Meanwhile, Daryl has taken a significant spill on his motorcycle, yet not only gets up unscathed with no damage to his underneath leg, but manages to catch up JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME to take out the guy on the gun that magically now can’t kill anyone from close range. Then Rick of course escapes with no serious injuries from the jeep going down the embankment and flipping. We were just missing “Yippie Kay Yay Motherfucker!” 2) Jerry, the character that everyone likes, just happened to be the only guy left besides Eze-E and Carol, and apparently he didn’t even get hit  3) The fucking doufus Erick Stoltz-in-Pulp Fiction-wannabe. I mean, he just happened to be out in the open field behind them after that fury of bullets? And somehow has time to grace us with multiple soliloquies, yet only one walker catches up to them each time? I get that they were using him to say what Eze-E was already feeling, but I hate that type of exposition, and the entire thing was stupid, despite being split in half being kinda cool

I also thought a lot of the King Ezekiel/kingdom story arch was really well done. Pretty much agree with all of your "good and bad". I will add one more to the bad though and it is another "just in the nick of time" when Ezekiel was about to get killed by the nerdy Savior...you knew damn well that he wasn't going to come down with that blow before someone got him right at the last second (Jerry). I love Jerry but that was ridiculously cliche.

You mean Jerry who can split a human being in two vertically with an axe but can't even make a scratch in an old rusty chain with same said axe?

Same, I thought that might have been the best episode of the season. Really good acting for the most part and some great character development on both Negan and Father Gabriel. Same for Simon. To me, Negan is hands down the most interesting character this show has had. But from the limited preview they showed of the garbage people, that episode is going to be terrible. Wtf even go back to them? Just annihilate them after your war with the Saviors is over.

Rick just missed the “up up up”

Really, the beauty of The Walking Dead is the character development.
The zombies have taken the place of most animal life and are the "man-eaters" of this universe.
It's an out of balance universe seeking a new balance.

You don't need to speak English to get a pilot's license in the zombie apocalypse apparently.

But I went back and re-watched the episode. It really was one of the better episodes they have put out. The Rick and Darryl fight scene was about the only cheesy/unbelievable moment (basically a slow motion explosion scene ala MASH). But at least Rick's Jeep would not start after facing the biggest bullet barrage on a Jeep we have seen since Nam. But everything else was actually extremely well done in my eyes, the rest of the season could (caps lock on COULD) be good.
