Thee Ohio State University News

Somebody please stop the madness in our legal office and fire whomever is in charge of this nonsense.

Ohio State wants to trademark the word "the."
Unfortunately fans end up taking the brunt of this stupidity by having to distance themselves from the university for its own stupidity

its pretty freakin arrogant to think they can trademark this word.. I dont see how they get it

This has been building because the adults in the room (looking at you Drake and the board members) haven't stepped in and stopped this deranged room of whack-job lawyers from going full retard.

I've thought about this more and while I don't know for sure I very strongly suspect that all that Ohio State has done with the trademark application, which I have not seen, is seek exclusive use for a specific small subset of representations of the word "the" for branding of a small number of things (i.e., apparel). The reporting makes it seem like they're trying to monopolize use of the word generally, but there's no way that even OSU's counsel are that stupid. Whether "the" branded apparel is wise marketing or whether THE OSU is overzealous in trying to monetize every single thing on Earth that can possibly be monetized are separate questions for me.

Embrace THE(tm) hate. They hate us cause they ain’t us.

Fuck em if they can't see the(tm) stuffed suits protecting the(tm) University from vultures on Lane Ave selling $15 THE(tm) shirts out of stolen Kroger shopping carts on Saturdays.

Sometimes, it's jealousy. Other times, however, it's just plain valid criticism of when we do something stupid. And this is stupid. One additional way to look at it for those more narrowly focused (not saying you're in the group) is what impact is this having on recruits when the university is being ridiculed from coast to coast. We want to think that every recruit is Dwayne Haskins and is all in when they're 10 years old, but for many it comes down to a very fine line between their top 2 or 3 schools. And right now, School A is a laughingstock while Schools B and C are not.

I don't think recruits run in the circles where this is what they're being clowned on for.

I mean, this is the kind of absurd stupidity that patent and trademark lawyers exist for, so I just can't find a reason to care too much about this. Is it annoying and stupid? Hell yes, and I wish Drake would tell them to knock it off, but if it wasn't this then I'm sure the haters would find some other pointless thing to mock in the meantime. You don't hear about 'Cuse trying to trademark the word "Orange" a few years back, so this will just fall off into a r/CFB meme in another week or two. And I'm sure the lawyers would find some other stupid thing to try and trademark that would draw the ire of everyone, because that's just what they do.
