Recruiting in Texas today....

That's where I graduated high school. Do they actually have talent there now? That was the worst football program I've ever seen.

Cleveland.com interviewing Urban after Herman announcement..

"Q. When you look at the short list that you talked about, how important is it to get somebody who recruits that area, or are you comfortable redoing your recruiting territory?
No, I'm playing with that a little bit. Texas is Texas now. I'm trying to think of the players, David Nelson and (Indiscernible) at Florida, and I'm sure I'm going to miss someone. But Texas guys, I don't want to stereotype them, but they're usually very well‑coached. They love football. They've been raised a lot like Ohio. A kid in Ohio, you're going to play football normally. Kid in Texas you're probably going to play. I've always loved to go down there. I love the high school coaches. So we need to, and that's part of the job description is to be able to go get a kid out of Texas.

Get to know Ohio State QB coach Tim Beck from one of his former players, Nebraska QB Tommy Armstrong

Tim Beck won't be the man who decides Ohio State's quarterback battle.

Not because Urban Meyer doesn't trust him. It's because Meyer said that's not a fair burden to place on a guy who's been the Buckeyes' quarterback coach for a little over seven months.

Instead it will be Meyer's choice. Maybe with some input from new offensive coordinator Ed Warinner. But mostly, if not solely, Meyer's.

If this was a year ago, you could bet Tom Herman would've been a big part of that conversation. Herman was given as much credit as anybody for the way Ohio State's quarterbacks performed last year. That's how we knew Herman, as the engaging, cerebral quarterback coach who got the best out of J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones in the Buckeyes' National Championship run.

Beck we don't know as well. The players in the quarterback room are still getting to know him, just as everyone outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center is.

But there was a guy at Big Ten Media Days who knows Beck very well. Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong was recruited by Beck out of Texas in 2012, and worked as Beck's starter the last two years.

I spent a few minutes at Armstrong's roundtable interviews in Chicago to try to get to know Beck a little better:

• Beck was hired by Meyer in large part because of his ability to recruit Texas, something Herman did well for three years in Columbus. Armstrong was a four-star quarterback from suburban San Antonio who was one of the highest-rated players in Nebraska's 2012 class.

AS A FIRST-YEAR POSITION COACH, TIM BECK FINDS HIMSELF IN UNIQUE POSITION REGARDING OHIO STATE’S QUARTERBACK BATTLE

57617_h.jpg,qitok=Ka3K6Pt8.pagespeed.ce.w6-POWr2-L.jpg

Tim Beck has been coaching football since 1988. He’s seen plenty of quarterback competitions in his day. But when the question came in Monday evening, Ohio State’s new quarterbacks coach didn’t even hesitate before he provided an answer.

“This will be it,” Beck said in response to being asked about the most interesting quarterback battle he’s ever been a part of. “There’s no question.”

But Beck is in a unique position with this particular battle. Because it’s his first year with the Buckeyes — Beck took over for Tom Herman, who departed to become the head coach at Houston following the 2014 season — he doesn’t really know the two guys competing. After all, Beck has only had spring practice and one week of fall camp to work with both Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett.

Everyone here in BP kind of knows what to expect from the offense going into 2015. Our QB's will be fine, regardless who starts. The offensive line will be strong this year, provided they all can stay healthy. But the one gray area that alot of people will be talking about is QB coach Tim beck, and line coach Ed Warriner.

Tom Herman did such a fine job in preparing Cardale Jones in his run against Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon. That was really huge. Now Herman is gone and Tim beck and Ed Warriner have the task of trying to see what kind of offensive pattern will best suit the Buckeyes, especially in the beginning of the 2015 season. I hope it all turns out well in the long run as we look forward to another great run for the Ohio State Buckeyes this year.

I know he's one of yours now, guys....but is it wrong of me to wish a small, Tim Beck sized meteor hits somewhere in Columbus and only hits him?

Sorry guys - it's like having surgery to relieve a slipped disk. You still feel phantom pain every once in a while.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW: TIM BECK HAS BIG SHOES TO FILL IN HIS FIRST SEASON AS OHIO STATE'S QUARTERBACKS COACH

Perhaps Tom Herman didn't quite get enough credit for what he did with Ohio State's quarterbacks during the 2014 season.

If you really step back and think about it, the Buckeyes' quarterbacks situation a year ago was somewhat stunning. Ohio State lost its starter and two-time Big Ten Player of the Year (Braxton Miller) 12 days before the season opener. He was replaced by a redshirt freshman who had never played a collegiate game and all that guy (J.T. Barrett) did was go on to finish fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting after undergoing a season-ending injury of his own. After that, a guy who was more well-known for a tweet than his football skills (Cardale Jones) stepped in and led the Buckeyes to the national title.

Beck is no Herman but I didn't think it would be this bad. I heard somewhere that he was the Achilles heel of Nebraska's offense. Hope the next game is different. QBs look like they regressed. Play-calling or coaching?? I don't know. They definitely can turn it around..not many teams can play that bad on offense and still win.OH!

When Herman was hired, the Iowa State fans that people talked to here swore that Herman had held their team back. I'd suspect there are very few fanbases who don't think their offensive coordinator is shit.

This. Also seems like they're an easy target for criticism.
After 2 games with plenty of stupid turnovers and penalties... people still going after a guy that isn't even the Offensive Coordinator.

Stupid turnovers, a lot of which were due to the QB throwing to the wrong jersey. Both Cardale and JT have regressed from last year: missed reads, slow decisions, can't catch the snap, missed balls, feet not being set, not reading defenses. I'll put that on the QBs and the QB coach. Play calling seems strange, but no matter the play the QB shouldn't repeatedly miss wide open receiver.

Honestly, if someone else didn't bump this thread, I was going to. Been holding off most of the week, but I'll go ahead and publicly question just want exactly he brings to the table.

Biggest thorn for me is the eerily similar lack of visibility and comments from him that reminds me of Everett Withers (how many interviews did that guy even do? 2?). Seems like the last time we heard from Coach Beck was his amateur comment about "flipping a coin" to decide who got first reps to start Fall Practice- which seemed to upset Cardale. It has been mishandled since and both QBs look awful in their decision-making, throws, and confidence.
