NEW YORK (AP) -- In a decision sure to be criticized by fans of the NBA, the league has taken punitive action against NBA All-Star Tim Duncan and veteran NBA official Joey Crawford.

Duncan, a three time NBA Finals MVP, has been suspended for five games, a decision that will impact the playoff fortunes of the San Antonio Spurs. A fine of $100,000 will also be assessed of Duncan.

Duncan was penalized for his ejection from Sunday's game against the Dallas Mavericks, as well as comments made after the game in which he accused Crawford of having a vendetta against him, an allegation Crawford denied.

In a statement released by the league, his failure to leave the court area in a timely manner, as well as gestures and comments he made while doing so, contributed to the length of the suspension.

Crawford, one of the most recognizeable referees in league history, has been suspended for the duration of the regular season and upcoming playoffs. Audio and video recordings of the incident obtained by the league office did not accurately reflect statements Crawford made to league officials.

His comments during the game were also noted for being confrontational in nature, which drew a strong response from a league desperately trying to maintain a clean image.

Representatives for the Spurs were unavailable for comment. Crawford did not return calls Monday afternoon.
This was a joke I found on a Dallas Mavericks site.

The Tim Duncan suspension was good and bad for the NBA. First of all, was the "no call" really what Duncan was laughing at. He could have been laughing at something else. It is good for the NBA because it shows that players can't be above the referees. If they players mess with the refs, they'll be in trouble. Kind of plain and simple, it shows authority. It is bad for the NBA because the suspension really was rediculous. 5 games for this, I mean c'mon. A fine or maybe a 1 game suspension like a normal ejection is.
