Time to get our act together!

I wish I had something insightful to add as well, but alas Oiler and Oh8ch said it well. It's just time for each one of us to look at ourselves. I am hoping that the end of the election will straigten out the political board and I am going to make a conscious effort to make sure ALL things political stay there (or are moved to). Yes, swearing needs to be toned down a bit on the football board IMO, but that is also what the language filter is for. I think one thing people don't use enough of is the ignore feature, don't like what someone constantly says? You DON'T have to read it.

It seems to me that some of the most frequent and "well-known" posters are some of the worst offenders.

...

If they want a more fan-friendly site, then some of the senior moderators need to lead by example.

What is this red laser spot doing on my chest?

Mili,

First off, I've used "colorful" words myself so I'm no saint.

You're not the only one but you and Dihard are probably the most frequent offenders.
DiHard's the worst in my opinion.

Every other word is the f-word sometimes.

Geez, you guys are talking like this is a funeral. Anyone with any brains know the rules of the recruiting forum. Now that Decision 2004 is over, this site should revert back to its normal great place.

Small changes are all thats needed. I try not to cuss very often in my posts, but rather enjoy some of the colorful posts by everyone.

I'm all for correcting a 'Newbie' if he starts a BN-type thread, but some should be a little more tolerant of newbie posts. It's a little disheartening when someone is called "an elitist BP'r" (or something to that effect). It makes us all seem like a bunch of pompous (insert language filter here) assholes.

Well said Oh8ch and Oiler.

I too feel guilty over the whole situation. Could I have been more diligent .. yep. Could I have harped on some folks more often ... yep. Could I have policed myself better ... yep.

Ironically, I've felt like I had been fighting a loosing battle for some time now. And maybe I just gave in and started going with the flow of things. Taking care of the News Links (which I still haven't gotten to today), organizing the Game Previews and watching the Blog/Article system (oh yeah, I have a job too), leaves little time for reading and posting on the forums. At least much less than I'd like. So on that end it's hard to see everything that's going on. Further, it becomes wearisome to step into the middle of every (or even many) perceived wrong(s). People get upset with you for pointing out what should be obvious. It gets to the point where you feel like your nagging and speech making all the time. I even had a very good member here tell me I was on my soapbox too much. He was right too. I didn't notice it so much at the time, but now I always think about those things before I post. So it's no fun for me (or any mod) to be (or be thought of as) the board police (nazi). In fact it sucks. What most people forget is that the mods are just regular folks who want to talk Buckeyes. If they need to clean up a mess or two along the way, that's part of the bargain. But all the members need to keep the forums at the standards we expect from Clarity's site.

FWIW, the foul language does bother me when I see it post after post. I believe that Clarity wants us to have that option if and when we need to use it to make a point. Not to spew it constantly simply because we can. That waters down the use of such terminology until it becomes meaningless. In a post just a day or two ago, there was a discussion on how to handle the newbies who are starting silly/meaningless posts. I suggested giving them a nudge in the right direction before going off on them. This lead to the discussion of what foul language constituted a nudge or a push. I didn't push the point further. I understood that people were having some fun and it was humorous ... so no offense was taken. But that small acquiescence on my part was/is part of the problem. It permits a slow gradual decline of our standards. I expect the very best from this board and from the members here. The vast majority of you have shown excellence in the past and I fully expect that same excellence in the future. I would be extremely disappointed in MY standards if I didn't expect that from the folks in my Buckeye Family ... Buckeye Planet.

I am as guilty of this decline as anyone else, maybe more so, as I'm expected to take a stand. So my post is as much for me as for anyone else. I will now relinquish the soapbox.

Through a structured/free for all Newbie HAzing program, they can become elitist pompous BPers too.

i personally enjoy using foul language. i don't see anything wrong with it and i highly doubt 99% of the country that doesn't draw social security or deal with televangelists has a problem with it. as for that one percent, i hate those fuckers.

i also can't ever imagine a scenario where a recruit says something like the bad language on some random message board really turned me off on that school. i don't even know if i would want a kid on my team with that type of decision making skills. still though i can/will respect the rule as regard to the recruiting forum.

i also agree that we should never bad mouth the school, football team, coaches, players, or recruits on that one particular board but i certainly hope we can still call em like we see em there and elsewhere.

for example, i don't see the fascination with chris wells as a tailback. i think he looks a little stiff as a running back and would be much better suited chasing the ball instead of carrying the ball. i have other thoughts on wells too that i choose to keep to myself by the way (hint: i have jerry westbrooks flashbacks). i would hate to have some fan take me to task for fairly criticising some guy's game. the way i see that, that is just expressing one's opinion on a player. it is my opinion and definitely not fact. i am wrong often and i hope i am wrong there. i hope wells goes to ohio state and wins a heisman carrying the ball. if a player can't take some criticism on his game he will never see his shortcomings and never overcome them. the great players realize where they need work and do something about it. the mediocre players read their press clippings and message board posts and rest on their laurels.

personally i like to hear the negatives on recruits. i hate always reading how good of a kid so and so is. who cares. let me know if the kid is a rotten bastard like murderer ray williams. that i need to know. i could care less if so and so leaves an apple on his teachers desk and sings in choir at church.

biatchabatuka,

First off, let me state this, that signature you have with the woman in the pink bikini is hot but I can't have that thing showing up on my work computer.

Didn't know if you'd entertain the thought of changing it to something a bit tamer.

In my spare time at work I like to peruse the site but it looks bad if I have that picture pop up and I'm not expecting it.

Just a thought

I don't think constructive criticism or pointing out some things a recruit may need to work on is a problem. Saying a player sucks or isn't worth a scholarship is where people cross the line. You can be critical and point out flaws without being an asshole.

Edit: I should probably point out I'm not calling VG or anyone else an asshole.

I had the same type problems with a lot of the sigs on here... so I went into the options and turned off the signatures... it actually makes for a much cleaner read now anyway!!!!
