Woops, I should have had a clearer head when I posted the announcement. Like I said, been a tough couple days, and my head hasn't been on entirely straight.
We're not going all-out PC here. I'm not asking anyone to change anything dramatically. The general philosophy of the site is still in place, which is that people should be able to express themselves any way they desire, and (given the proper tools) everyone else can tailor the site to fit their own needs.
Meaning, no one has to go too nuts watching their language. Because we have a tool in place for others to filter it. No one has to remove their .sig, because (and I really need to create a board features FAQ) as was pointed out earlier, you can turn off images and/or signatures in your user settings. No one has to leave because they think another person is an idiot, because you can turn the idiot off in your settings. I'm going to keep adding to those "personal preference" features, because I still feel that's what is ultimately going to give us collectively the best overall experience. Where anything within reason goes, as long as it's in the right place on the site, and people can expose themselves to as much or as little as they want to. And at the core of all of that fun, we can still enjoy some real football talk.
Discussing the positives and negatives of a recruit or player are absolutely fine. My thing is still just, "don't say anything you wouldn't want the player or his family to read." We got an upset PM from a parent of a recruit over some comments that had been made about his son. He wasn't upset about something as benign as someone saying "I don't know if X is big enough/fast enough/strong enough", etc., had he been, I would have just explained "that's football". He was upset about some jokes that had been made about the kid's name, and one in particularly he found morally offensive. People carry their own different moral barometers, and in the recruiting area, we just have to keep that in mind, that's all. Had this very same joke been applied to me, or anyone else in a different forum, it never would have been an issue. But in the recruiting forum, we just want to be a little tighter in there.
Another thing that is NEVER going to happen on this board is that the backdoor whiners take over. There was this amazing shift on BNuts where all of a sudden, if the whiners went to Kirk behind someone's back, action was taken against that user. How many times did a thread get deleted, or someone get chastized because "people complained". When people complain to me, my first thought is "how do I give this person the tool to adjust the site to their needs". It's NOT "how do I adjust the site to fit this individual's needs." And, in my estimation, it's that second approach that served to bring what used to be an outstanding forum down over there.
So no, we're not going fuckin' PC, we're not going to 'pussify' the site, and I didn't mean for my announcement to be a downer, but rather just a relatively gentle reminder that we need to police ourselves as a community.
