Time to get our act together!

Woops, I should have had a clearer head when I posted the announcement. Like I said, been a tough couple days, and my head hasn't been on entirely straight.

We're not going all-out PC here. I'm not asking anyone to change anything dramatically. The general philosophy of the site is still in place, which is that people should be able to express themselves any way they desire, and (given the proper tools) everyone else can tailor the site to fit their own needs.

Meaning, no one has to go too nuts watching their language. Because we have a tool in place for others to filter it. No one has to remove their .sig, because (and I really need to create a board features FAQ) as was pointed out earlier, you can turn off images and/or signatures in your user settings. No one has to leave because they think another person is an idiot, because you can turn the idiot off in your settings. I'm going to keep adding to those "personal preference" features, because I still feel that's what is ultimately going to give us collectively the best overall experience. Where anything within reason goes, as long as it's in the right place on the site, and people can expose themselves to as much or as little as they want to. And at the core of all of that fun, we can still enjoy some real football talk.

Discussing the positives and negatives of a recruit or player are absolutely fine. My thing is still just, "don't say anything you wouldn't want the player or his family to read." We got an upset PM from a parent of a recruit over some comments that had been made about his son. He wasn't upset about something as benign as someone saying "I don't know if X is big enough/fast enough/strong enough", etc., had he been, I would have just explained "that's football". He was upset about some jokes that had been made about the kid's name, and one in particularly he found morally offensive. People carry their own different moral barometers, and in the recruiting area, we just have to keep that in mind, that's all. Had this very same joke been applied to me, or anyone else in a different forum, it never would have been an issue. But in the recruiting forum, we just want to be a little tighter in there.

Another thing that is NEVER going to happen on this board is that the backdoor whiners take over. There was this amazing shift on BNuts where all of a sudden, if the whiners went to Kirk behind someone's back, action was taken against that user. How many times did a thread get deleted, or someone get chastized because "people complained". When people complain to me, my first thought is "how do I give this person the tool to adjust the site to their needs". It's NOT "how do I adjust the site to fit this individual's needs." And, in my estimation, it's that second approach that served to bring what used to be an outstanding forum down over there.

So no, we're not going fuckin' PC, we're not going to 'pussify' the site, and I didn't mean for my announcement to be a downer, but rather just a relatively gentle reminder that we need to police ourselves as a community.

Personally, I feel I've used these forums the way they were intended. On the other hand, it can be difficult when moderators and several of the "good ole' boys & gals" are instigating a smear campaign. Changes have to trickle down from the top.

I don't think any single person is representative of someone NOT using the forums the way they were intended. Everyone has done it to some degree. I made a big mistake some time ago removing the "Inter-Forum BS" area, because the reality is that we need it. I think most sites do if they're going to try and keep their focused area clear. When you say "smear campaign", perhaps out of defensiveness I assume you're talking about my SusanZ thread. And if you are, to a certain degree I agree. My theme in that thread was changed to something much more venemous when I allowed the thread to be turned into something it's not with comments that followed. I knew such comments would, and I probably should have policed them better. But I stress probably, because once that thread was in the right forum, it was where and when it was supposed to be. The other issue is we're talking about that out in the open. Anyone being attacked, or any of their peers, can come on here and defend or debate openly. In contrast, where I and this site get routinely thrashed, there is no opportunity to mount a defense. You simply take it, and suffer the consequences of it elsewhere. But, despite sort of defending my post, I absolutely agree that we all need to just take a look at our own actions a bit. No one has to change significantly, many don't have to change at all, but all of us (certainly including myself) just need to periodically look around the site and ask ourselves "is all as it should be, if not, how do we adjust it?"

Many here agree that BNuts is not the forum it used to be. Many would also agree when I say that it was once the absolute best place to talk OSU football online. In an effort to maintain the atmosphere we enjoy here, we need to be on guard against even gradual shifts towards somewhere we don't want the site to go. We'll never need large-scale corrections. We'll never just start banning people left and right, or reinventing the forum, or anything kneejerk like that. It's just sometimes we'll have to remind ourselves that we need to police ourselves better.

Amen, Clarity.

My apologies for my role in the recent paint chipification of much of the board. That was a running joke b/w AKAK and me that took on a life of its own. I'm blaming it on the chips I ate. Damn, there it goes again. :)

Okay, I think I've accomplished the following;

- The only forums shown in the most recent 15 on the front page, and most recent 10 from the main forum listing are; Football (General, Recruiting and Pro), Basketball (same 3), Baseball (same 3), and Other OSU Sports. I think the News forum is displayed as well, but nothing else. So no gaming, politics, PCP, Open Discussion, etc. should be showing up there now.

- The Paint Chip Party forum is readable by all, but you have to be a member to join. In order to join, you go through UserCP and set the request there, which is approved by one of the users flagged as group leaders. If this is all working as it should, we can open the doors to other groups as needed/requested/desired. I think there are some good possibilities here.

I wasn't referring to any one post by any one person. I've noticed it on several threads. You're right, as osugrad21 and I have already discussed, people need to think before they post and reply.

Agreed, which was meant to be 90% of my message in the announcement. It just got a little convoluted along the way.

Biatchamoneymaker,

Hey !! I only missed one on the fate tittie quiz! Can you top that ? You'd need a protractor to make a circle as perfect as those two.

I'm going to watch Alex Boone Sat. night and hope to take some pics. I may need some advice on how to post them here, though.
