Thought this would be interesting.

If any of you have been watching Sportscenter in July, you've surely seen their "Titletown, USA" segment/gimmick. Now, at first I thought to put this in the football section of this board. But as we all know, our Buckeyes display excellence in all playing fields.

We're all pretty reasonable people here for the most part, so I'd like to hear opinions on who YOU think is deserving of Titletown. Maybe even provide a top 5 or whatever.

Personally, I can't think of a better Titletown than Columbus except maybe LA, but that almost shouldn't count haha.

Here's the thread on Columbus over at ESPN.com:
ESPN - Conversations: TitleTown O-H-I-O

wow, this list is more impressive than i expected

57 national titles
182 conference titles
77 olympic medals (32 gold)
7 heisman trophies (T-1st all-time)
Jack Nicklaus - 18 majors (most all-time)
George Steinbrenner - 6 world series, 10 pennants as owner
Jesse Owens - 4 gold medals at 1936 olympic games in Berlin, 4 world records in 45 minutes at big ten meet in Ann Arbor
Bobby Knight - 4 NCAA basketball championships (one as player)

Are we talking only college? If not, then Pittsburgh should be a contender. The Pirates have won several WS, the Steelers 5 SBs, the Penquins 2 Stanley Cups and even Pitt has won an MNC.

Edit: Did you read the comments? GoBlow2569696969 or whatever his fucking name is sure is a bitter scUM fan. With good reason. I wish all their fans were like this.

Funny how every one is so quick to bring up the record against the SEC but no one brings up OSU's record against the Big 12. Hmm.

No. Massillon Washington was one of the featured contenders a few weeks ago, and Coldwater, Alliance, Lakewood, Youngstown, and a few others were all nominated.

The thing of it is, though, if you consider HS sports in the Titletown debate, Columbus inherits the Upper Arlington Golden Bears, who edge St. X by 1 with 40 OHSAA recognized titles, and can claim a state championship in at least 17 different sports, while their golf and tennis programs have been dominant.

Massillon is rubbish...they don't deserve to win a thing.

they outlined pittsburgh a few nights ago - something about winning a championship in every decade since the 60's i think (maybe earlier?)

The concept is sound...but to call the 'winner' title town is craptastic.

Titletown is Green Bay, end of discussion.

This would be like building a new college football stadium that is open on one end and naming it the Horseshoe....or The Big House. I guess if OSU wins the NC this year ESPN will rename us the The Ohio State University Trojans.

The more ESPN tries to take themselves seriously as THE authority in all things sports..the more of a parody they become. I miss the days when they just broadcast the games, gave us scores and highlights....and that was it. Their forays into sports politics and 'investigative journalism' have been train wrecks...it reminds me of MTV's programming..they don't even play music videos anydamnmore...Real World my ass.
