In regards to Herman, I just got done watching some highlights on the scout boards of some of his teams. What is unique about Coach Herman is that he has run two types of spreads. At Rice, where his offense ranked top 10 in points and yards, he ran a spread passing attack. Once he arrived at Iowa State, he didn't have the luxury of a QB that could throw with consistency, so he adapted to a running spread attack. From what I saw, the running formations that were used looked very similar to what Urban ran at Florida. Another bonus to Herman is that he is young, in his mid thirties I believe.

If we can get a beast of an O-line coach we will be set, imo.

That's not entirely true. He had a guy in Austen Arnaud who was a highly rated recruit going into his junior season after a breakout sophomore year. In fact, Ricki Stanzi was signed at Iowa as the fallback to AA after he committed to ISU. The problem is that Herman refused to go down field, which was AA's strength. Herman uses the philosophy that he makes players adapt to his system, rather than making his system adapt to his players. Right before our game against Texas Tech, Rhoads had a come to Jesus meeting with Herman, basically telling him to knock off the dink and dunk passing game and just run it. After that we reeled off 3 straight wins. Herman loves the dink and dunk game, so if Braxton isn't very accurate with the short throws, expect him to struggle.

Of course, Urban will probably in all honesty be the offensive coordinator, with Herman just wearing the title. In that case you'll be fine.

As a recruiter, most were very impressed with him. He brought some good talent in. Solid ties in Texas, and he is from Ohio I believe.

Another thing, Herman was the only coach on our staff whose contract had not been renewed. Not sure if that means anything or not, but its pretty clear he didn't have the best relationship with Rhoads.

I've watched plenty of tOSU games, probably my favorite team in the B1G after Northwestern. I'm still kinda shocked by this hire. It could end up being one of those things where it works out better for everyone involved.

Herman prepares for bowl game with Ohio State on horizon

The holiday season is a chaotic time for many, but this year it's especially busy for ISU offensive coordinator Tom Herman.

Herman is now the member of two college coaching staffs, as he was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State University on Friday. However, Herman will remain with the Cyclones through their Dec. 30 Pinstripe Bowl appearance against Rutgers.

"It is a bit hectic, obviously when your schedule changes any time [or] you get out of a routine a bit you have to adapt," Herman said. "The [coaches] have been great, coach [Paul] Rhoads has been great, the kids have been great so it's made it easy."

The day after Iowa State's regular season finale ? a 30-23 loss at Kansas State ? new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer called Rhoads to ask for permission to speak with Herman. Rhoads granted that permission, but approached Herman and asked if he would coach in the Pinstripe Bowl and do so with an attitude that reflects the team's motto of "All In."

"I challenged Tom to be all in in the preparation and the commitment to this football game," Rhoads said. "If he could be that way, he was going to coordinate through this game."

Without hesitation, Herman accepted Rhoads' challenge and will call plays from the coaches' booth at Yankee Stadium.

"I think I owe it to him, I owe it to this program," Herman said. "I owe it to these players that I've been around for three years and have built strong relationships that I want to see this year end on a great note."

To focus on coaching the Cyclones in their bowl game, Herman called on the experiences of Meyer. While coach at Utah in 2004, Meyer was hired by Florida but stayed on staff to lead the Utes to a Fiesta Bowl victory and 12-0 season.

"There's certainly a precedent there," Herman said. "It's been done before, and I'm just excited to be a part of this bowl game and be a part of [the team's] reward for their success this season."

Power Football

I just hope, and think it necessary in the B1G, he keeps a power running game. With the talent we will have, the O-line remains my big question. Hope this coach knows how to mix it up starting from a base of power running fundamentals. The talent at tOSU makes possible anything else on top of it. But the base needs to be smash mouth football, or tOSU will under achieve in my view. Feed the beef-eaters.

O-line blocking schemes are the same, H-back is a TE/FB, built in checks for QB (bubble screens), and using motions and play fakes to keep the D honest.
