Tom Herman (Head Coach FAU Owls)

Iowa State upset over Oklahoma State and Tom Herman

A few weeks ago, I had to explain to my kids how big of an upset it was for Iowa State to upset Oklahoma State. I am behind on my news, but I believe that this cost Oklahoma State a chance to play for all the marbles.

The big credit seems to have gone to the Iowa State defense, but bear in mind that Iowa State had a freshman quarterback:

I also seem to recall another OSU quarterback coach having a little trouble with freshman quarterbacks these last several years, even when they were rated number one in the nation, and completing even one pass per game was all that could be expected.

For these reasons, I am excited about the Hermanator. It is super cool to hear a mistake free offense being discussed, in conjunction with explosion. I enjoyed Tressel Ball, but if I must and if I had too, I could adjust to a mistake free offense with frequent explosions. I enjoy watching all the commercials that come after Ohio State touchdowns, and I am struggling to remember if the new Score Board can handle triple digit scores? With a generally good Ohio State defense and a non-explosive, mistake free offense, I am not sure the scoreboard has been tested that well.

Noting that OSU got the #1 rated QB in the 2011 recruiting and that Urban is working on the #1 rated QB (from Alabama) in the class of 2012, and the #1 rated QB in the class is 2013 lives in Ohio ....... I am beginning to daydream about 2 and 3 quarterback formations. I am envisioning sort of a Harlem Globetrotters style play in football with 3 great QBs on the field, in the backfield (not at wide receiver).

I better stop here before I start floating out of my chair ....

Who is the Number 1 qb for 2013 that you are talking about?

Is Jalin Marshall who it is? ( He is a amazing big and strong athlete. Wish Michigan could get in on the kid but not happening, all Osu) does he project better at other spots? And I also thought Shane Morris was the number 1 qb in that class.

I watched the Okie St - Iowa St game and specifically recall the performance by their RS Frosh QB and contrasting that to our 8 attempts per game from the #1 QB recruit in the nation.

Great get.

This link is where I got Tom Herman's view on both explosiveness and no-turnovers being important:
http://www.thebuckeyebattlecry.com/2011/12/meet-the-new-guy-ohio-state-hires-tom-herman/
"Herman?s big on preaching to his players about trying to win ?the double positive,? he explains of his biggest stat barometer.
?If you win the turnover battle and the ?explosive? game, stats say you win the game 97 percent of the time. We preach that to our kids daily. I think I read a study a few years ago about it and it?s certainly held up in all of my years as a coordinator."

Regarding explosiveness, I might comment that it is sometimes easier to have a guy sprint 80 yards for a TD rather than gaining 3.34 yards per carry.

Or in Tressel Ball terms ... the punt is still the most important play in football, but since it is so easy to mess it up, why not avoid it altogether and just have the offense explode into the end zone (so long as of course there is no fumble until the endzone).
