Tony Joiner (Former S Florida Gators)

From what I was told by friends and fellow CFB fans tonight. Meyer said he would not play in the game on TV prior to the game. They then said they saw him playing in the 3rd quarter.

not sure if this is true or not, anyone know?

I think he was on the field (if he is #19) during LSU's game winning drive....

Actually, as they were about to come onto the field, Urban Meyer indicated that he would play but not in the first series.

Let's summarize.

1. Get arrested and charged with a felony for breaking into a locked parking area to retrieve your girlfriend's car between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m.
2. The head coach takes away the player's captaincy and says that his playing status for the game at #1 LSU is doubtful while charges are still pending
3. Numerous Florida fans make threatening calls to the tow lot owner so he asks that the charges be dropped
4. The prosecutor says that since the lot owner doesn't want to press charges, there's nothing to charge him with (ever hear of trespassing?)
5. The player sits out the first series of the huge game

Stay classy, Gators.

UF's Joiner disappointed after arrest, dismissal as captain

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida safety Tony Joiner said Tuesday he accepted responsibility for his arrest last week, a felony burglary charge that was eventually dropped but led to his dismissal as team captain.

"That was the worst thing in the world, to be stripped of my captaincy and just knowing how hard I worked to get where I was and to lose it on a boneheaded mistake and a boneheaded decision," Joiner said. "It was tough for me."

Lot of stones being thrown at those Gators. I remember a few years back when it seemed liked fans from every other program in the country were heaving stones at us. For whatever reason, fans have a need to believe their program is sparkling clean and everyone else's is on the take.

Personally, I don't see UF having any more or less problems than any other program around the country. I highly doubt Urban was involved in getting the charges dropped, and while he may suspect others were, what's he supposed to do?

Did some fans/boosters pull some strings? Is tow company owner a fan himself? Or is the story just as stated? The fact of the matter is that no one on this board knows. After what we went through, I choose not to speculate on those things that we do not know.

If you're referring to my post, I listed 5 things reported as facts. I don't believe I was speculating on anything.

But since you asked what Meyer should have done, now I'll speculate.

If this was at OSU, I would have wanted the player to sit (at least for the next game following the arrest, regardless of the opponent). I believe it's important for the team members to know that there are consequences for their actions. Over the long term, I think that benefits the program. I'm pleased that JT's actions seem to indicate a similar belief.

Not referring to anyone's post in particular, just the overall tone of this thread and numerous others. Just seems like there is a lot of judgment of kids and circumstances where we may not know the entire story. And I remembered how much it sucked when it happened to us. Also, I really haven't seen enough of this kind of thing from Urban to think he runs a thug program.

As a side note, your point:

What was the source for that? I hadn't heard that.

I wouldn't say Florida is a thug program, or anything close to that. But they have had 8 arrests in the last 9 months, so that would concern me if I were a Gator fan, which I'm certainly not. I don't have a hard-on for Florida; just like every SEC school, Miami, and FSU, I hope they lose at least 2 games every year.

I'm sure this report was mentioned earlier in the thread (yep - post #89), but it's easier to re-post it. I don't blame the tow lot owner for dropping the charges, but I think the prosecutor should have filed reduced charges (e.g., trespassing).

Report: Towing company owner got death threats after Gators' Joiner arrested
Associated Press

The owner of the towing company involved in Florida safety Tony Joiner's burglary case said Saturday he received more than 200 threatening phone calls.

More than a dozen of the calls were death threats and others were bomb threats, Stan Forron told Florida Today. Several callers even offered to pay the $76 towing bill if Forron would drop the charge.

"I'm just glad it wasn't Tim Tebow, that's all I can say," Forron told the newspaper. "I think I would be covered in 10 feet of concrete right now if it had been Tebow."

Joiner was arrested around 5 a.m. Tuesday for allegedly trying to take his girlfriend's car out of the towing company's impound lot.

The State Attorney's Office dropped the charge Friday at Forron's request.

Although Forron, who acknowledged his allegiance to the Gators, said he wanted the charge dropped from the beginning, he never expected the reaction he got from Florida fans.

Judging by all those lovely calls, it would seem Florida fans don't care what their players do off the field.
How come Willie Williams didn't end up there?

Damn! I told the other 199 alumni not to do that.

Taos, while asshats a-plenty abound, there is a deep and universal hatred for the towing companies - the scourge of Gainesville, who are well known to abuse the law by towing anyone they can - regardless of the legality of the pic.

It is my genuine impression that some of the animus is concerned with that. And, of course, there are asshats who are mad that a team favorite is in trouble. Ya know - the same asshats that make phone calls and - in other venues - overturn cars and set fires. But I think it safe to say that it would be equally untrue for one to say "It would seem "X team" fans don't have any regard for private property, being thugs and arsonists."

I have not a doubt in my mind that were the same incident to occur in Columbus, the towing company would receive identical phone calls from OSU fans. Not the slightest bit of doubt.

Report: Ex-Gator Tony Joiner Arrested for Allegedly Murdering Wife

Former Florida Gators safety Tony Joiner was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in Lake Wales, Fla., on Saturday for the killing of his wife in 2016, according to theNews-Press.

Per the News-Press, the death of Heyzel Obando had remained an unsolved case for more than three years. Obando, who was 26, had been found dead in her apartment on Valentine's Day in 2016. Obando's death had been ruled a homicide two months after her body was recovered.

Joiner's arrest on Saturday marked the first since Obando's death. Per the News-Press, court records show that he had been arrested twice for beating Obando.

Joiner, 33, played safety at Florida from 2004-07. He played under former Gators head coach Urban Meyer and served as a team captain during his senior campaign.

Joiner is the second player from Meyer's 2007 Florida squad to be arrested and charged with murder, joining former Gators tight end Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez was arrested in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd. In 2015, he was convicted of first-degree murder.

Undoubtedly Urban will (unfairly) get the blame for this one too....

2008 Florida Gators Won a National Title, and 41 of 121 Players Have Been Arrested

Fast-forward five years, and the New York Times has a postmortem on that team: of the 121 players that were on the roster that season, 41 who “have been arrested, either in college or afterward, and sometimes both.”

What does it all mean? The Times doesn’t make any foolish leaps and attempt to draw conclusions – like pinning it all on Urban Meyer – but obviously, this will come back to him because the media loves to beat him up. (If you’re not friendly with the media, they lay in the cut and wait for you to screw up, and then unload.)

I am disgusted to see the attempts to (a) smear Urban Meyer over this and (b) to refer to his time at Florida and Ohio State and comment on the player arrests and behavior. Ohio State under Urban Meyer was and remains a clean program.
