Game Thread tOSU at Cal Bears, Sep 14, 7 ET, Fox

http://www.insidebayarea.com/sports/ci_24097984/ohio-state-routs-cal-52-34

FIRST QTR: Ohio State wins the coin flip and defers. Cal will receive the opening kickoff and will defend the north goal.
Cal fans may remember Devin Smith, who just caught that 90-yard TD pass for a 7-0 Buckeyes lead. He was the same guy whose 72-yard TD reception beat the Bears in Columbus last season. Beat redshirt freshman Damariay Drew for the touchdown.
You think Smith would like to play every game of his career against the Bears?

My opinions.. of the obvious

DL did very well
OL did very well
WR did very well

Guiton - did extremely well and then as the game wore one, tapered to mediocre..
Did not make the run reads as well later in the game; did not have the same level of touch later in the game
RB - Hall did very well but I would have liked to have seen the battering rams come in at times.. Welcome back Carlos
Wilson did very well; wish he'd pack on 20 pounds before taking on LBs

Defensive back 7 - you're not going to like watching game film
Tackling was bad; coverage was mediocre
As they say, when a DB makes a mistake.. everyone sees it
When a pick hits you in the shoulder.. well.. nuff said

Thank you DL.. Spence & Bosa earn the awards

Punting needs work.. still no follow thru (stabbing at the ball)
Coverage teams were good except for one (but he was the CA sprint champ - so that says something)

Play calling.. went from an 'A' to a C- ..
Why did we forget about the long game?
Did we feel nervous about the D so we needed to work the clock?

The Good news

1) KG and the offense
2) DL was able to pressure the QB and got some sacks
3) Front 7 on D was able to stop Cal's running game. (Before someone brings up Lasco picking up yards late in the 4th Quarter, at that point in the game the defense was giving them that play. Cal was not going to even make it close by taking 3-5 minutes running the ball for scores)

The Bad News

1) Tacking on the edges was bad.
2) We either don't have a scheme to stop WR screens or we can not execute the scheme we have.
3) DB have to make those picks. Imagine how we would view the defensive effort if they would have made just one of them. Now imagine how we would feel if they made both.

One thing we are forgettinv is we dropped three ints and had one called back due an offsides. If you put 4 more picks which 3 of t hem lead to cal touchdowns later in the game this game is not so bad of a defensive game. Catch the ball defense and tackle. We do those thi gs last night and our defense looks great

I said the same thing last night to my brother. You can't argue with the plan. It worked. The players just couldn't hang on to the ball.
