Roby said this defense needs to wake up and realize it can't take plays or drives off

Brandon Castel ‏@BCastOZone
Roby said the defense looks up and see how many points the offense has on the board and they start to relax.

Brandon Castel ‏@BCastOZone
Roby even said guys on defense were laughing and joking around on the sideline before they gave up those last two touchdowns.

Coaches need to hold these guys accountable.

Man, I hate it when I read stuff like this. I guess I'm just envious, but I can't imagine taking plays off.

Just be glad you missed the last 2 minutes..

Speaking of which. Just got back to Alaska, was able to catch off it recorded up to the 6min mark in the 4th with the Bucks leading BIG! I was relieved when I looked up the score and saw we won 52-49. Holy crap!

Not only did the players look tired, uninspired, and almost a bit cocky, but dang it was boring. Just blah all around.

Hopefully they work this crap out this week at practice. Hopefully they arent buying into themselves after Michigan State and Nebraska wins.

I'm very happy that the team remained undefeated. A day at the office like that can do wonders for a team with potential ego challenges. All week the press kept up the "tOSU undefeated AP champion" meme. Even as the only undefeated team, they would not deserve that honor based on the weak schedule that they face this year.

So, those last two minutes might just be the most valuable coaching moment this defense gets this year.

A quick slap in the face can do wonders for one's focus.

Not sure why they'd be real impressed with themselves after the MSU win. The Spartans stink, as does the rest of the Big 10.

That said, Ohio State right now is the class of the Big 10, which doesn't really carry much weight nationally. Kind of like being the tallest midget.

Purdue has to be licking their chops. If there are 2 more minutes then Indiana wins that game. I saw something last night that really bothers me and that was a team that just stopped playing. I'm sure the Indiana players will tell you the same thing.

Indiana beat the piss out of that defense tonight. Coaches got outcoached and players got outplayed.

Remember when we all (myself included) were mocking Michigan and Rodriguez for trying to simply outscore opponents? Well that's what Ohio State is right now folks.

Negative....our defense stinks compared to our normal standards, but when you take on the #1 offense in the B1G (Nebraska) and it isn't just trading points, you're obviously better than Michigan's defense.

no, it stinks even without normal standards, right now, OSU ranks 69th in total defense

Hopefully someone tells Roby that you just don't let the live ball go out of bounds on the onside kick. At the very least you make sure the ball gets out. That pissed me off almost as much as the other defensive issues.

If we ever see a play that bizarre again, it will come as a huge surprise to me. I can't see getting too exercised at Roby about that one. Especially as the call was blown by the officials.

I completely agree. The defense bought into the hype that the offense has generated over the last month. For me, the reason the game was so hard to watch was because that was one of the most complacent performances I've seen in a long time. The Gator Bowl performance lacked the same sort of spark.

There doesn't seem to be a leader out there on the defense... a player that holds things together from play to play and gives the squad some sense of direction and continuity. Individual players seem to wake up and make one-off plays now and again, but there's no standard bearer. Maybe that's part of the effect of missing guys like Nathan Williams and Storm Klein, and guys like OJ or the rest of the CB crew simply not having the maturity and vision to keep the group from going slack.

That's why putting Boren in there was the only way to go because, beyond his instinct and motor, he was able to at least serve as an example of what a leader is supposed to do out there.

I don't know who has been pushing that meme but I don't think it's a prevalent as you believe. Historically, teams on probation aren't typically handed that honor.

Regardless, the "AP national champion" is nonsense these days. They chose to remove themselves from the championship process, which does exist no matter how imperfect. In the 21st century, their game of American Idol only means something to themselves, and some of the fans of the team they choose as winners. It's a joke now. I couldn't tout it as a "national championship" with a straight face it, anyway, especially without even playing a bowl game.
