Game Thread tOSU at Penn State - Oct 27th, 5:30 ET, ESPN

Sack MyGroin will probably have one of his better days against us. Ped State has actually been playing well and Bluto O'Buttfuck has done a solid job of coaching. The key will be our defense...period. We'll score our points, but I'm seriously concerned about how our defense will play in that environment under the lights.

On the road, in a game that PSU wants probably more than any on their schedule, I don't like OSU's chances.

Let's face it, the OSU D is what it is and that's not very good.

Urban was exactly right when he said they weren't going to get much better during the season. I know fans expect a fresh start every week and there's new hope, but the Indiana game and the Purdue game have convinced me that this team is nothing more than mediocre at best. Indiana got beaten by Navy for crying out loud.

Even with a healthy Braxton Miller I could see PSU being able to take away that dimension of the game (kind of like Purdue did) and dominating the LOS.
Now with Braxton banged up and PSU brimming with confidence and playing with a serious chip on their shoulder I just don't see this one turning out well for Ohio State.

It's easy to think this way, but I'm not seeing a lot of game breakers on PSU's offense, and the OSU D's incompetence at tackling fast guys in the open field isn't really all that likely to be exposed. Also, unlike teams like NW, OSU can probably grind them down a bit. Finally, I don't think Purdue took away Braxton so much as he was just horribly off throwing the ball and didn't keep it much on the ground. I see the coaches coming up with a less vanilla game plan on both sides of the ball, the players being highly motivated, their inbred crowd pissing the team off even more, and the Bucks winning fairly comfortably. I doubt they'll have four turnovers, multiple injuries, a blown kickoff coverage, and appllingly one-sided officiating to deal with this week.

Defensive stats from yesterday:

Passing: 19-30-1, 230 yards, 2 TD
Rushing: 38 rushed for 113 yards (3.0 ypc), 0 TD (doesn't include fake punt run for first down)

Take out the first play of the game and the defense held TurdBrush to 18-29-1 for 147 yards and 1 TD. So, the defense improved somewhat from the previous two games. Actually, they improved a shit-ton statistically but since it was Purdue, whose offense were horrid the previous two games, I'll just say they improved somewhat.

The thing that now has me concerned is how Purdue stuffed to box all game long and dared Miller to throw. When Miller can hit a couple medium/long passes and break off a long run or two, the defense backs off...but when he can't, we're in deep shit like yesterday. We are simply going to have to be able to pass the ball in Slappy Valley, it's as simple as that.

Penn st is much bettter defensively than Nebraska. We have to play great and mistake free. 17 to 14 kinda game. We have to throw the ball to win. Short quick passing game would help open up the rushing game....Imo. go Bucks

Our defense is made to stop this kind of offense, imo.

I actually kind of disagree. We should be able to contain them in the run game. However, the way they use their tight ends and intermediate passing game, our linebackers are going to have to significantly improve in the passing game. If Perry isn't healthy, our three linebackers are probably going to be Williams (a defensive end), Boren (a fullback), and Shazier. They're all going to have to play their best games of the year for us to slow down this offense.

I'm really worried about our defense's ability to get off the field against this offense. We've struggled all year on third downs, but had a good game against Purdue in this category. However, with Penn State, it's going to have to be getting off the field on third and fourth down, seeing as they don't really even kick field goals anymore. I'm afraid this could prove to be problematic for our D.

Penn St is actually playing quite well right now. On the BTN last night they declared them the most complete team in the BIG right now...that might be disputable, but they have looked good as of late and will be very confident heading into this matchup. I'm convinced the Bucks will have to demonstrate the ability to throw the ball early to get the D to back off a bit. And lately, we have not done that well. As for their offense, McGloin is playing his best ball and seems pretty steady. If we can't pressure him it could be a long day especially with as banged up as we are. Bottom line, I don't feel good about this matchup...here's hoping Urban can pull another rabbit out of his hat and find a way to win this one.

Even with the departures, Penn State is a more talented football team at nearly all positions (excepting perhaps defensive line) than Purdue. And we're playing them at their home. Doesn't lead me to be sanguine at all.
