10-POINT SWING? Ohio State's trip to Happy Valley will be decidedly happier this year as the pandemic situation has eliminated Penn State's best player this season, and I'm not talking about Micah Parsons.

10 points might be just a bit of a stretch, but I'm perfectly fine admitting that place and that crowd scares the absolute hell out of me. 'll happily take a crowdless Beaver Stadium if it's offered

PSU QB Sean Clifford shares simple thought on Ohio State game

When Penn State football kicks off its 2020 campaign later this month, it won't take long before the AP No. 10 Nittany Lions are faced with what will likely be their toughest test of the regular season. Halloween will see the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes roll into Happy Valley, and the victor could very well be the team that ends up playing for a Big Ten title in Indianapolis come Dec. 19.

Don't tell that to Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford, though. The Nittany Lions' second-year starter, when asked about the contest during a media session on Thursday, would rather invest his time and energy in Penn State's Oct. 24 season-opener at Indiana before shifting his attention to the hurdles that Ohio State may pose seven days later.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t even know we had Ohio State in Week 2," Clifford said Thursday on a media call when asked about the showdown with the Buckeyes. "All I care about is Indiana right now. And that's pretty much my only comment on that."

Week two: Penn State

This will be a night game, which means for anyone who likes to get a little beforehand, please watch yourself. This contest has tons of “I got too drunk and wasn’t able to actually pay attention to the game” type energy. If you’re drinking, please drink responsibly, at least until the Buckeyes have secured a win. Then, do what you want.

The reason you’ll want to remain somewhat responsive is that this game should be a barn burner. Penn State averaged 35.8 points per game last season. This year, they return their quarterback, running back, and four of their five starting offensive lineman. By all accounts, the Nittany Lions are going to have one of the best offenses in the country.

Recent history also tells us this will be a good game. Three of the past four seasons have been decided by three points or less, with the Buckeyes earning two wins by a single point. If this game is something like 49-45, it wouldn’t be all that surprising. Penn State probably will get some special teams luck. They’ve killed us in that area the past few seasons.

This game will be a close one, where Ohio State finds a way to pull out a victory. The ultimate difference between these two teams is one team has Justin Fields, and one doesn’t.

The Buckeyes will win, but rather than getting credit for a quality victory against a top-10 opponent, all we will hear about is how Ohio State could’ve been in serious trouble if Happy Valley was allowed a full crowd.

PENN STATE

Penn State almost killed me and my brother Matt in 2008.

Hitting the rewind button over a decade ago, the undefeated No. 3 Nittany Lions were visiting ninth-ranked Ohio State in a key showdown that had Big Ten title implications. Freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor had the Buckeyes surging in the polls, but he faced a stiff test in his sixth career start.

At 6 a.m. that morning, Matt and I departed from Canton, Ohio for the two-hour trip south to Columbus. We had scored tickets in the A-deck from my mom's boss, who randomly had some availability to an insane all-day tailgate party.

It was a long day and an even longer game that Ohio State dropped 13-6, in brutal fashion. Matt and I didn't get back to his car until well after 12:30, and we painfully settled in for the hike back home.

We had just made it outside Columbus city limits when my brother groggily turned to me and mumbled, "It's gonna be a miracle if we make it home."

He wasn't inebriated. He was exhausted. I was too, but I wasn't going to add literal death to the terribleness of the night.

I wanted to sleep on the way home, but I forced Matt to pull over and begrudgingly took over for the last 1.5 hours of driving time. I remember cranking up the Dave Matthews music we were listening to (leave your judgements at the door / in the comments) when Matt turned to me and said, "Turn it down I'm trying to sleep."

I was so tired I didn't even question it. I just turned Dave down and drove in misery.

Still hate you, Penn State.

With a families-only Beaver Stadium, that stupid cat-snarl is probably going to be played on a loop all game long.

And in the evening, the recorded growl of the Nittany Lion will echo throughout the empty stadium.

...all
...night
...long

Since the Disney Family of Networks took this game, there's a good chance Fowler and Herbie will be doing it, so there are several good reasons to watch the game on mute

As the Big Ten's reigning champion, Ohio State eyes a fourth straight conference title. From the East Division, is there a top threat for the Buckeyes from getting back to a Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis?

Former OSU head coach Urban Meyer (2012-18) set the scene Monday during an appearance on Big Ten Network.

"Well, the rivalry's always going to be there — and you better take that one as if that would be about the Wolverines," Meyer said. "That everybody in Columbus, Ohio, most importantly — everybody in that Woody Hayes facility — the enemy is very clearly identified. That's the Wolverines.

"However, with recruiting the last few years, with just the roster, I would have to go with Penn State. Ohio State escaped a big challenge when the White Out will not be a White Out. I think everyone knows my feeling on that one, our players' feelings. That is ridiculous, to go in there and play. It's going to be a scrimmage atmosphere now in State College.

"On just pure talent? I would say the challenger of the east — and the challenger of the Big Ten — is Penn State. Legitimately challenge to go to Indianapolis? You've got the Big Three — you've got the Wolverines, Penn State and Ohio State. I just think right now it's Penn State and Ohio State. One of those two teams will be in Indianapolis."

They dominated that IU game statistically and shouldnt have lost that game. They should be pretty ticked off next week so I hope our guys don't take them less lightly.

Biggest match up for us has to be our DL vs their OL. Have to hold up against their run because they don't have a ton at WR.

I like that we have a game under our belts against a team that returned 5 OL players and their backfield.

They couldn't really run well or control the LOS against IU. It was mostly QB driven.

Dual threat QB's are going to hurt you to some degree in any defense, just need to limit it as best they can and force him into positions where he's prone to turn it over.
